The keel is prepped for paint, gets levitated and thoroughly sealed with high-zinc epoxy primer. Tapatya gets a wash and a pair of Victron Energy solar charge controllers. And Hazel's boat upgrades continue with the bow roller setup, the disappearing through hulls and a new instrument panel.
This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of the build as it progresses and aim to show as much detail as possible of the various aspects of the build.
These videos take a lot of time and effort to make, in what is already a time-intensive project. Your support in watching, subscribing and sharing these videos is very much appreciated. You make a real difference!!

hi i'm tony and this is the story of the
0:38
build of this 31 foot eight inch jay
0:41
benford designed cruising sailboat from
0:44
the lofting of the lines to her emerging
0:47
from the boat sheds to receiver keele
0:49
marston all the other paraphernalia that
0:52
make up a cruising vessel
0:54
join us on this adventure as we
0:57
build topacha and hopefully set off to
0:59
test her out as a liveaboard cruising
1:02
vessel
1:04
[Music]
1:07
hey i'm tony
1:09
as you probably know the last few weeks
1:12
i've been uh building the ballast kill
1:14
it's a steel box filled with lead
1:16
basically with the
1:18
bolts the kill bolts all integrated into
1:21
it
1:22
and that was finished last week
1:25
and this week has been mainly about um
1:28
clean cleaning that up getting some
1:30
epoxies some zinc rich epoxy sealer on
1:33
it
1:34
and preparing it to fit to the boat
1:37
really
1:39
one of the first jobs well the first job
1:42
actually was to uh see that this kill
1:45
timber
1:46
that i'm leaning on here
1:48
the kill timber fitted onto the bolts
1:50
you know as i built the ballast kill i
1:52
was fairly careful i had a template that
1:53
i kept trying to check the bolts were in
1:56
line
1:57
um but when we come to lower on it was a
2:00
bit tight so uh took us a couple of goes
2:02
two three goes actually
2:05
and lifted off drilled the holes out a
2:07
little bit bigger in places where
2:09
necessary
2:11
um
2:12
mainly from the bottom but for some
2:13
reason the bit of video of me working
2:15
from the bottom hasn't come out but
2:17
worked him up from that from the top
2:19
mainly from the bottom as i say until it
2:21
went down happily onto there
2:23
and then i was able to to use the kill
2:25
timber
2:26
to jack it up
2:28
and
2:29
get around
2:31
the ballast kill which you can just
2:32
about see in the bottom of the picture
2:34
here i think
2:42
it's starting to look pretty good
2:43
doesn't it
2:47
[Music]
2:58
[Applause]
3:01
ready
3:08
there we go
3:20
this one i don't think it'd be the
3:22
bottom so it's tight i'm not the top
3:43
um
3:47
and just go down fairly straight
4:02
[Applause]
4:28
[Applause]
4:46
[Music]
4:53
uh
5:56
okay
5:59
[Applause]
6:14
[Applause]
6:35
absolutely useless
7:15
had to clean the ballast keel up now i
7:17
told you last week that i had a a
7:19
sandblaster and in fact i didn't i gave
7:22
that a go but
7:24
it didn't touch the mill scale on the
7:27
still if
7:28
maybe if i'd have persevered for a very
7:31
very long time possibly
7:33
but it didn't seem to be very effective
7:35
so
7:36
back up plan plan b
7:39
the trusty old flappy wheel on the
7:40
grinder
7:42
and spent several hours going around the
7:44
whole box cleaning up back to shiny
7:46
metal
7:47
and then as soon as i finished as soon
7:49
as i was finished with that straight
7:51
away on with that with the zinc epoxy
7:54
primer
7:59
[Applause]
8:43
zinc epoxy primer on there right now
8:45
there will be one more
8:47
to go on there and then i'll get some
8:48
regular epoxy sealer primer on there
8:52
a few coats of that
8:54
then a coat of vinyl
8:57
vinyl is a bonding agent between the
8:59
epoxy and the anti-felt and then uh but
9:03
and then the antifoal on top of that so
9:05
there'll be no lack of paint i've got
9:08
this zinc rich epoxy on there now i'll
9:10
get a bit of my normal epoxy sealer
9:13
primer on there after that and then i'll
9:15
stand the keel to one side the ballast
9:17
kill to one side
9:19
and work on the timber and the timber
9:22
needs to be sealed
9:24
last
9:25
shaped up at the front end at the
9:27
leading edge
9:28
so that'll be coming up next
9:38
well the weather has been lovely for the
9:40
last couple of weeks or so today sadly a
9:42
bit less so but uh
9:45
grab the opportunity to get up there in
9:46
the beautiful sunshine and and wash the
9:49
winter's grime off the boat and now
9:51
she's looking
9:53
shiny
9:54
[Applause]
10:00
[Music]
10:30
one thing that's been going on that's
10:32
rather
10:33
difficult to film is i'm installing a
10:36
couple of solar charge controllers
10:39
um
10:40
as you may remember the plan is or i
10:43
have four solar panels to fit
10:46
and i'm going to split those into two
10:47
banks of two run them through two charge
10:50
controllers to
10:52
to minimize the effects of shadow
10:54
minimize or to reduce the effects of
10:56
shadow
10:58
so i've now mounted the two controllers
11:00
and running wires through
11:02
the back of my electrics bay here
11:04
through into that cupboard in the heads
11:06
and up
11:07
through a deck fitting
11:10
um on the deck
11:12
and up to the panels that would be on
11:14
top of the bimini perhaps as we can get
11:16
in there and just uh have a look at
11:17
those controllers
11:23
[Music]
11:25
two veteran controllers
11:34
and i've chosen the controllers that
11:36
have the uh they have a bluetooth signal
11:38
that they they give out so you can see
11:41
on your phone you get an app it's in
11:42
your
11:43
phone that the settings and what sort of
11:45
uh you know what sort of output the
11:47
panels are producing and that sort of
11:49
thing
11:50
interesting i think
11:54
also we've been going up every weekend
11:56
every sunday we've been going up to
11:58
hazel's boat because it's that time of
11:59
year when
12:01
she's getting ready to get back in the
12:03
water got a couple of small projects or
12:05
lots of small projects that she wants
12:08
done upgrades getting ready for a next
12:11
sailing adventure
12:13
so we're up there and making progress
12:25
[Music]
12:34
so i saw you crawling up in the forepeak
12:36
there hazel what's going on there yeah
12:38
uh well
12:40
we were just putting a backing plate on
12:43
the bow roller yeah the barrel yeah okay
12:46
that's all gone well
12:48
yeah it has now it was a bit tricky yeah
12:50
this is your new bell roller setup isn't
12:52
it this is the anchor we're going to
12:54
have a look at that in a minute
12:56
good what else we've been doing
12:58
okay uh so
13:00
we glass all the through holes um
13:03
the the ones that we took out earlier
13:05
like a few weeks ago
13:07
and we put in the depth sounder uh the
13:10
transducer and run the wire
13:13
through the boat and into the
13:16
reader yeah
13:18
the display the display this year
13:21
uh
13:23
yeah exactly into the whole like room in
13:25
a instrument panel yeah few
13:28
yeah nice
13:30
some time ago
13:32
let's have a look shall we yes here's
13:33
the instrument panel and it's very
13:35
simple it's got the autopilot control
13:38
unit there the raymarine one and the one
13:41
below it the grey one is the the depth
13:43
reader
13:44
and the little vintage grille because it
13:45
actually
13:47
is all fitted in where the vent for the
13:49
heads used to be and
13:51
we still get some ventilation there
13:53
looking good right nice
13:55
these are through holes for the
13:58
disappearing rapidly now we put six
14:01
six layers of fiberglass and epoxy on
14:02
there filled from the inside there's a
14:05
light filler over the outside there just
14:06
fearing compound over the outside
14:10
yeah the bow ender yeah come on point
14:13
upwards
14:17
there it is so we've got the stem fit in
14:18
there stainless stem fitting that you
14:19
saw hazel making a while back
14:21
and there's our roller mounted
14:24
just need to get an anchor in it
14:25
[Applause]
14:52
that's it for this week thank you for
14:54
watching
14:55
give us thumbs up leave a comment even
14:58
better hit that subscribe button
15:00
and uh next week there won't be a video
15:03
i've got a road trip to make off to
15:05
england for the week or most of the week
15:08
um but uh we'll be back the week after
15:10
next pushing on
