Well guys, we bought another boat! In this episode we pack up our trusty van and head South to check out an Achilles dinghy and Tohatsu outboard we found on Craigslist. We take it for a test drive in Marina Del Rey, then strap it to the roof for an adventure back up the coast to Emeryville. We give up our live aboard status and move marinas, requiring us to upgrade our dinghy to be able to commute to and from anchorages on San Francisco Bay
Hope you enjoy!

i
am out on the sandbar near our marina
i paddled out here and it is a beautiful
morning
enjoying some quiet time thinking about
the next
big adventure we are about to start so
we are choosing to give up our
liveaboard status
at the marina that we are currently at
and we're moving next door
to a slightly more affordable marina i'm
excited and a little nervous
obviously but excited to see
how we do trying to stay off the dock a
little more
how it is being a little bit more
nomadic
in our lifestyle we are making the jump
to get one step closer to cruising
one step closer to being a little bit
more self-sustainable
so luckily our work is super flexible so
we can kind of arrange and figure out
when we want to go
work on clients boats and how that's
going to work
the best for the fact that we're going
to be off the dock a lot more
you know we might need to buy a heftier
dinghy to be able to commute to and from
anchorages
to to clients jobs in different marinas
you know we really don't know what to
expect exactly but
it's exciting to be exploring new
options and
and it'll actually push us to be
cruisers on san francisco bay which is
one step in the right direction so we're
excited
in this episode we trade in our soft
bottom dinghy
for an upgraded adventure mobile
strapping it to the roof of our van
and driving it up the california coast
[Music]
we're driving down south to marina del
rey to
hopefully buy a dinghy that we found on
craigslist
and it also comes with an outboard that
would be
bigger and more powerful and hopefully
be
much more reliable and safe to be
commuting to and from our boat while
we're anchored out a lot more than we
have been so we're super excited
hopefully it's in decent condition
hopefully it's not a total
flop because we're driving about six
hours to go see it
so fingers crossed
what is it 270 fx
so it has a folding transom and then
it's a hot suit
9.8 if we do buy this thing we're going
to strap it to the roof of our van
and then drive it all the way back up
the coast so
wish us luck hopefully we don't have
some kind of dinghy catastrophe
out here
all right we will see how this goes
it's always a toss-up when shopping off
of craigslist
not knowing what kind of condition the
item will be in until
you see it in person lucky for us
after checking out the engine things
were looking clean and well maintained
we also checked that the valves held air
when unscrewed
as they can be a point of failure
what do you think
i mean it's you know it's got age but
none of it looks like it's coming apart
or anything
d-ring patches here on both sides
and then there's a there's an actual
d-ring on the hole
at the base there
let's try it yeah
with the engine running well at idle it
was time to take it for a test drive
and see how it maneuvered and went up on
plane
the guy who was selling it only allowed
one of us to go at a time
so jack took her for a spin through the
harbor
with jack's approval before we knew it
the dinghy was ours and we were motoring
it to the nearby boat ramp
[Music]
now it was time for the real challenge
we planned on spending one night in
santa barbara before heading north
so we had to make sure that the engine
would fit below the bed so we still had
a place to sleep for the night
all right we fit it into
the space below our bed in the van
just barely fit in there
okay now the hard part hopefully we can
get the dinghy
up onto the roof of the band
and then we have to really strap her
down so she doesn't
go anywhere when we drive up the coast
again
all right we'll see how this goes you
guys who knows
this might be a total dinghy fail
we'll see
how do you think
where the hillbillies live
we definitely got a couple of funny
looks at the boat ramp
but as sailors we know how to tie a knot
and we figured we'd be nice and secure
what do you think it'll be good
i don't think it's gonna move around
very much
we had a cozy night sleeping in the van
in the tiny town of carpenteria before
starting the trek home
where are we santa barbara trying to
find food in a ghost town
we're not in santa barbara oh we're in
carpenteria
trying to find food in the ghost town
everything is closed
and everything just says we'll be open
this weekend
but it's wednesday today so
that's not really an option for us but
we're gonna head up to santa barbara and
see what we find there hopefully we can
at least get some coffee and some
breakfast in us
and then we'll head back up the road
back north
with only a quick pit stop along the way
for some lunch
we made it back to emeryville excited to
have a sweet new ride to go on more
water-based adventures
we decided her name would have to be
carla as we had brought her
strapped to the roof of our car all the
way up from l.a
all right we've got her out of the van
back together
all right we are home with the dinghy we
just launched her at the ramp and we're
headed to our boat with all of our stuff
can you tell he's excited
catch us next time as we head up river
to the sacramento delta for some fresh
water fun
we are headed up into the delta for a
week
we introduce our newest crew member as
she gains her sea legs and enjoy the
highlights of delta life
swimming fishing and of course we deal
with a couple of
exciting boat life moments and we got
back to the boat
and it smelled like electrical burning
and then all of a sudden we heard our
anchors start to drag
