And so begins our Kubota diesel nightmare!
In this episode, we return from an offshore sailboat delivery and discover a disturbing rattling noise coming from our Kubota diesel engine. Determined to find the culprit, the crew jumps head first into a major engine re-fit.
But don’t let me spoil it for you, watch it for yourself!

this time on to the horizon sailing we
return from a delivery offshore and
discover a terrible rattling knocking
sound coming from our engine
[Music]
Jack felt confident we could find the
culprit but after a couple of days of
troubleshooting to no avail we decided
to call in the big guns chugs but then
there's just this weird it's like
metallicky not a consistent thing it now
there's just like it sounds like - no
gear something maybe something came
loose in the timing system how it really
sucked yeah whooping just cussed him out
yeah you want to hear how shitty it
sounds yeah yeah yeah what you're
telling me I know it's gotta be torn
down you gotta figure out what's going
on
we contacted the local mechanic who
installed the engine for the previous
owners five years ago to come and take a
listen something obviously is getting
caught and thrown yeah so we broke off
in there and tell me how you really feel
the next morning we got right to work
first we covered the wood surfaces all
around the engine compartment with
cardboard to protect our varnish engine
or our got a lot of cardboard or align
that maybe we have a plan I've been
thinking about months weeks
if this engine was coming out we were
determined to do as much of the work by
ourselves
of course as boat life has it our engine
bay is located in the most inconvenient
spot as possible preparing for this
engine endeavor meant serious
dismantling of our galley cabinetry
which meant serious disruption for our
everyday life we're trying to push the
thing this way it's gonna run into this
piece of wood here already now this is
that 4200 hold that on once you get
it tilted up like this then we should be
able to like flip it all the way over
and do it like that you know instead of
this thing so this is 25
hey plans completely changed once
again this just come up here and sit
right here you might have to pick it up
turn it sideways because this is gonna
want to be outside this is a perfect
example of what boat life is all about
being flexible getting the cabinet
removed meant it was on the engine
project had officially begun good job
that was a productive first day so we're
taking the oil out from the engine and
taking it up to the disposal site in our
marina being responsible taking it to
the right place so that it can be
disposed of correctly and it's a
beautiful day here in Evansville all
know it's me when I come through your
town because my boat is so beautiful but
just got crap everywhere
so Jack just drained the transmission
fluid out of the engine transmission is
this piece right here is that fluid to
keep it cool
yeah because friction is heat so gears
running on each other are gonna be hot
and to end it keeps it lubricated yeah
if you've never seen one of these these
are awesome
hand pump oil extractors you can use
them to pretty much suck up any kind of
fluid
they're pretty handy totally handy our
whole transmission has been taken off so
we're looking at the inside of
transmission there's all these weird
ding marks dunes were these ones that
you took off
oh there's one missing holy no but
it might also be that it fell when we
pulled it off like that one could have
come off and it was flopping I guess
we'll find out if we find it if it's all
scratched up oh damn
so given the fact that our galley sink
is a little disconnected right now we
have to wash our dishes outside so I'm
gonna go clean up because it's been a
couple days we haven't really been
cooking much because we don't have our
galley put together and we've got parts
all over the place but we still do have
a couple dishes so I'm gonna go clean
them up a boat is kind of in shambles at
the moment so we've got some work to do
these are the dishes I'm gonna clean see
it's not too bad
[Music]
hello this is Jack Patton I'm calling
today to order a engine housing please
yes nine three three zero five zero once
parts were ordered all we could do was
wait one bolt rattling loose quickly
snowballed into a complete engine
makeover how's it going that nairobi I'm
just hoping I don't get stuck in here
yeah you're good and got food and water
