EP 30: Sailing Channel Islands - Albert's and Yellowbanks In this episode, we continue our sailing to the Channel Islands, we point our bow towards Santa Cruz Island and get a little bit of sailing in before anchoring at Alberts anchorage. The fog finally burns off and we spend time fishing and exploring before setting off to Yellow Banks anchorage, another favorite in Channel Islands National Park. We explore the remote islands and get a real taste of cruising in California. We hope you enjoy this adventure and join us as we spend a couple weeks cruising west coast and enjoying the remote anchorages!! when we left off we had packed up the
boat with provisions and headed down the
california coast with our friend nikki
we arrived to exciting weather at santa
rosa island
just to wake up the next morning to a
complete calm as if the wind had never
been there the night before
we raised our sails and pointed our bow
towards santa cruz island
headed for our next anchorage
all right well the fog has rolled in
we just loaded right into it
so coaches is just over there in the fog
we just went to try and check it out but
it's really small and there's one boat
already in there
so we're gonna take a look at albert
sanchez which is just around this corner
we'll see what we find it's really tough
because it's super foggy out
ready
all right i am on the paddle board i
just set our stern hook
it's really small and tucked in between
these crazy rock faces
all right fog burn off whenever you'd
like we weren't about to let a little
fog
keep us from enjoying our surroundings
one two three
alberts anchorage was made a popular
dive destination back in the 60s
they set up small beach huts on shore to
welcome visitors who came by boat to
dive the clear waters
guests would spend a couple of days
diving and sleeping in the beach huts
but with wet winters dangerous
landslides
and too many roaming guests exploring
parts of the island that weren't allowed
they closed up shop by 1969
jack grabbed the gopro and went to check
out our running gear below the water
line
her bottom looked pretty clean but when
he got close to the prop
he noticed something very alarming see
the bronze ring to the left of the anode
that's our cutlass bearing it's not
supposed to be visible like that
but don't worry we'll eventually open
that whole can of worms but that'll have
to be for a future video
the fog burned off and by the afternoon
that's when the fish began to bite
we were stoked to be putting food on the
table in the most sustainable way
possible
straight from the ocean
yes fish tacos
another fish kitties in the net okay
get out of there get out of there so i
can cover this
thanks everyone for your efforts team
effort once again
anchoring fishing cooking cleaning
[Music]
all right we are headed to coaches to
check it out by dinghy
gemini is over there and we're headed
over there
to check out this other little anchorage
looked like a sweet spot so we made a
mental note to come back to this
anchorage the next time we came to the
islands
all right it is time to move to our next
anchorage
we are leaving albert's anchorage and we
are heading
i think to yellow banks so that's at the
eastern end of santa cruz island we're
gonna go check that out
there is also smuggler's cove right
around the corner so we might also go
there
but we're ready to move on so we'll see
what we find at the next spot
[Music]
as i detangled the stern hook from kelp
and raised it into the dinghy
i didn't even notice that i had brought
a stowaway on board
so i just picked up our stern hook
and look what i found
in the dinghy oh my goodness
wow hi little guy
wow they're so crazy how they move
with our octopus friend safely back in
the water we headed for the eastern end
of the island towards yellow banks
anchorage
here we have yellow banks
anchorage and then just past this little
rock formation here it kind of sticks
out
we've got smugglers cove which is right
ahead of us here
anna kappa is over there
in the distance behind us
once we settled in it was time to cool
off
i went for the classic cannonball but
jack took a slightly sillier approach
okay guys
while we cooled off nikki whipped up
some tasty tacos with the fish from our
catch at alberts
good luck all right we are on a fishing
excursion nikki's on the boat with
fathom
and we are hopefully coming back with
some dinner
we caught one rockfish and spent a while
swimming off the dinghy before heading
back to the mothership
we're back
[Music]
you want to see a fish when we got here
earlier today it was just us
in the anchorage and then we swam
and we went fishing and we went took a
little nap
and then we woke up and
there are boats and we live
behind us and one of our neighbors
dinghy was drifting away so jack just
went to save it
how'd it go it was definitely drifting
huh
well good thing you saved it save the
day
it is night what four of hodgepodge
dinners
we've been pretty good for hodgepodge
finding whatever veggies need to be
eaten first
out of the fridge and usually either
rice or quinoa or pasta
tonight we're having some grilled
sausages with it
and one little fish that we caught today
sweet it's gonna be delicious we had an
early night as we planned to go hiking
on shore the next morning
we landed the dinghy at smuggler's cove
not super gracefully at all
what do you think nikki my clothes were
very wet
we almost flipped the dinghy it's
definitely not the easiest spot to
beat your dinghy maybe someone's got a
trick that we don't know about
but we're gonna go on a hike now and see
what we can find
up in the mountains off we go
[Applause]
as we gained elevation our filmmaking
got more and more
dramatic
[Music]
you guys did amazing
single take on that shot we're killing
it today
just killing it with the cinematography
here on santa cruz island
it's just so picturesque and beautiful
nothing could go wrong
beside the fact that i'm sweating and
this
uphill never seems to end
as we reach the top of the hill we could
see santa barbara channel
little scorpion and scorpion anchorage
we also noticed
that the land around us was scorched
from a large fire that had ravished the
island
just six months before it was then that
we ran into a park ranger
who kindly told us that we weren't
supposed to be hiking through the burn
area but we wouldn't know this because
the signs that marked the closed trail
had been delayed delivery due to covid
how long did it take to get the fire to
patrol
[Music]
so we are back at smugglers
we are back at smugglers cove we went on
a beautiful hike
and now we are back at the beach and the
tide has gone out
significantly which i'm hoping will help
our whole
dinghy situation because landing it was
definitely not very smooth so
fingers crossed we can do better on the
way out
okay it's still there
back at the beach we passed the remnants
of an old shipwreck on shore
and made our plan to avoid swamping the
dinghy on the way back out
we decided that jack would hop in the
dinghy and fire up the outboard to get
past the breaking waves go for it
though the gopro footage doesn't do it
justice
jack barely made it over that wave nikki
and i followed him out past the break
and hopped back into the dinghy
we deemed the dinghy mission successful
and headed back to the boat for lunch
beautiful so that here's the deal with
the turkey guys
okay it was slimy but it didn't smell
bad
it didn't taste bad so i rinsed it great
and i dry those
napkins i love it real cruising life
we left yellow banks after breakfast and
had our sights set on going to little
scorpion anchorage
which we had heard wonders about all
right so we woke up this morning in
yellow banks
and we decided we were heading to little
scorpion
anchorage just around the corner but we
got here and there's about
four or five boats anchored it is a
sunday
so there's probably a lot more people
out than normal
so now we are headed west towards
potato harbor so
right over there is scorpion anchorage
we saw it from the hilltop up there
yesterday on our hike
and it's cool to see it from a different
angle
let's see what's around this point here
join us next time as we bypass
crowded little scorpion to anchor at the
most beautiful spot we have seen
so far thanks for watching
we'll catch you next time and until then
don't forget to subscribe to our channel
does it get any better than this that's
my question
[Music]
a huge thanks to our patreon crew you
keep this boat afloat
