ONE more day in PARADISE & Fathom Cat SWIMS at Cuyler Harbor!
Closed Captions (CC):
when we left off we had spent two nights
in famous fry's harbor
exploring our surroundings both above
and below the waterline
and are surprised to find our anchor
sitting on the bottom
all right we have left prize harbor on
santa cruz island
we got in between santa cruz and santa
rosa island
and we just got engulfed by this crazy
fog
i'm just keeping an eye out for traffic
and hoping we'll catch a fish before we
get to
san miguel we are hoping to stay there
tonight
and hopefully sunday night and then
early monday morning we'll be
starting our trek back up the coast
heading up to morro bay to get some fuel
and then from there we'll probably head
to santa cruz for one night and then
we'll
head back up the coast to the bay
wow you're pretty dude but are you
edible
wow what is that thing really long
yeah long and skinny okay let's look
i think he's something fast so i'm
thinking he's
close to some of these oh pacific
barracuda watch out
yeah that means they got teeth usually
found so
south of point conception but it may
range much farther north
especially during oceanic warm water
events
so just under yeah ah man
that's okay that was sweet yeah okay you
ready i'm gonna toss them back
okay excellent table fare
they do have strong fish taste like
salmon or tuna
so they may not be everyone's favorite
barracuda or best broiled baked coach
sauteed or grilled
pretty much like any way of cooking well
we were
within an inch on that last one yeah we
are approaching san miguel island
luckily the fog is burning off over here
you can see prince island
says you can go in between san miguel
and that
tiny little island but it's not
recommended if you've never been here
before
there's a lot of kelp and stuff so we're
gonna stay on the
north side of it
it is said that the explorer juan
cabrillo may have died on the island
in 1543. although cabrillo claims to
have
discovered the island in 1540
archaeologists
found bones confirming that humans
inhabited the island
as far back as 10 000 years ago
this anchorage is sheltered from
northwest to southwest winds
but is exposed to strong northeast and
southeast winds
unlike most of the anchorages we visited
at the channel islands
kyler harbour was wide and spacious with
plenty of room to anchor
it's beautiful here there's
four other boats two sailboats two
powerboats
but it's a nice big anchorage so we're
not too worried about swinging into
anyone
we set just about anchor and we
are gonna get ready to go explore via
dinghy
there are sea lions hanging out on the
beach
behind us excited to spend tonight and
tomorrow night here and then we'll be
heading back up north
san miguel island show us what you got
come on
we beat fishing every day all day
doesn't catch anything but two small
barracudas
hey that's something oh the water's so
clear here wow
little pebbly rocks
and a ton of sea lions
man we made it just in time we would
have been coming in
in this pea soup fog
before we could even drop a hook to try
and catch us some
dinner the fog began to roll in quickly
gobbling up the boats in the anchorage
as we headed back to gemini fathom was
on board
standing watch as the fog barreled
towards our bow
hasn't even been like half an hour since
we got here
and the fog has just rolled in and now
it's really thick
you can barely see gemini we spent the
rest of the evening
sipping tea in the cockpit and playing
board games
good morning it is really really thick
fog here
we had all these hopes of getting up and
snorkeling
and going on a walk on the beach and all
these fun things
but now it's turned into a quiet lazy
morning which is okay
we are headed back up the coast tomorrow
so
it's our last little bit of off time
before we're
back to real life
as the sun began to peek through the fog
we jumped in the dinghy to check out the
beach
okay i mean it's pretty shallow it's
faster
like this i think and then whenever you
want i would go that way because i see
rocks or something there
yeah we're still in a lot of water
there you go
okay one two
three
oh we're still working on our dingy
landing skills
but man look how pretty it is honey
so blue
so how often are you on the island um
it's usually eight days at a time
any volunteer or volunteers so um
yeah checking out friday okay and i'll
go home on friday
oh cool do you camp or is there like
housing yeah cool yeah you know it's
typically foggy and windy here but this
summer
i've only had maybe three foggy windy
days wow
which is rare for out here yeah we
always heard that
the san miguel was like the more like
treacherous one
of the islands not this year yeah i'll
enjoy it i'm gonna get down here i don't
get to get down here very often
yeah it's beautiful lisa right yes
sonia and jack nice to meet you guys
yeah for sure okay be safe are we good
here yeah
okay
well that was cool we got to talk to the
volunteer park ranger
lisa today she was really nice she knew
a lot about the islands
she told us santa kappa is definitely a
good one for fishing and lobster
which darn we didn't make it there but
maybe next year so close
but we've had a great trip and this
beach
is so beautiful it's very beachy
very beachy quite
san miguel island is an ecological
reserve and is only open to the public
on a limited basis
this is mainly to protect the seals and
sea lion rookeries
as well as to avoid accidents with the
unexploded bombs and ammunition
still remaining on the island's sandy
hills
to explore beyond the main stretch of
beach one must obtain a permit and
coordinate with a park ranger for a
guided tour
pokey rocks pokey rocks
the park ranger lisa told us we had
missed the guided tour for the day
so we decided a quick walk on the beach
was enough to stretch our legs before
heading back to gemini
um kill switch is good
okay just don't freak out
okay come in forward
so this is the less flattering side of
cruising
we are a day and a half away from
leaving
going north i am washing
a bunch of dishes over here because our
boat was starting to smell like fish
and we want to be nice and clean for the
passage north
and jack is down in the hole
doing some engine clean up some checks
part of our engine maintenance is
cleaning out the salt water strainer
because you can definitely end up with
sea grass and we have kind of just like
some like
mossy muck stuff that seems to be just
kind of clogging up all the little holes
so we were noticing a little bit of
smoke yesterday
so it might have been because it wasn't
getting enough
all right today is the day that we
start swimming lessons with fathom cat
we figure she's going to live on her
boat her whole life
might as well get her used to the water
and at least see how she reacts
when she is in the water and how she can
self-rescue with the
braided rope we tied to the stern of the
boat
so fingers crossed she doesn't just like
claw the crap
out of me and hopefully she has the
right instinct
to swim to the boat and to climb up the
rope ladder that we made her
all right here we go
here fathom come here hey
found him look good look here
goes here have him come here hey where
is she
okay let's try to get her to the rope
and see if she'll just climb with a rope
good girl fathom
good girl good girl
she swam really well right here again
oh god i'm shaking
[Music]
definitely need to do more practice i
guess
nothing like a wet cat
good first swim hey not many kitties can
say they swam for the first time
at channel islands you look so funny
come here let me keep drying you off we
get her in the sunshine too
yeah i'm sorry we had to do that to you
but you gotta learn you did good but she
found the rope that second time
yeah well i mean i pretty much dropped
her right in front of it
why don't you swam fine like yeah
good girl kitty climb on everything
get dried off
with our wet kitty grooming herself on
board we hopped in the dinghy to squeeze
in
one last island fishing adventure just
as the sun was setting behind the
mountains
oh yeah two big rock fish
and jack had just caught one right
before three rock fish in what
five minutes five minutes all right
let's keep fishing right here
awesome
i think kitty's finally relaxed after
drying herself off and grooming herself
and proving to us that she was
definitely mad at us
about making her go swimming today
we sailed off the anchor the next
morning after breakfast
setting off on the first leg of our
journey home
another day in paradise
vacation's not over yet max moving it to
a different anchorage
all right i gotta pay attention to which
way i'm steering now
as we sailed out of kyler harbor a
passport 40 sailboat was entering the
bay
it wasn't until we were beamed to beam
with them that we realized who it was on
board
well that was sweet we just passed
another
passport 40 and guess who it was it was
hilary and ty on adventure adrift
they've also got a youtube channel
they're way more
youtube famous than we are but we've
been chatting online with them
for quite a while we actually met them
while they were up in the bay
uh boat searching so it was actually
great to
at least get to talk to them over the
radio and great we just missed you
we're planning be in moro bay by sunrise
so
the uh 17-hour trip starts now
that's a good thing looks like you guys
are on a p40 huh
we are we are yeah all right welcome to
the passport club
we were hoping to meet up with them but
you know plans always change and
it's hard to plan when you're out of
cell phone reception it was great to at
least
see that they're getting out here to the
islands and enjoying them just like we
did
[Music]
those are big ones too
[Music]
tell us our conditions where we're going
what we're doing where we're headed
well we're headed directly north now ps4
must freeze
and we're going to try to sail as high
as we can
once we get up to the shipping channel
we'll try to attack and see
how far we can point up again and then
try to sail until it dies on us
we had some spectacular sailing as we
headed towards the santa barbara channel
but once again we were gobbled up by
more pea soup
fog catch us next time as we sail into
the fog
dodging container ships and wishing that
we had radar
we make it past point conception and
make a quick pit stop in morro bay
before heading up the california coast
all right you guys thanks so much for
watching we really hope you enjoyed this
video
and a special thanks to colleen s and
karen c
