How much water do you need under your keel? I like to have at least 1m but in this situation I made an exception, but only after thoroughly checking the situation out. Still makes me feel pretty nervous and I didnt fully unclench until we made it safely into the deep lagoon.

G'day guys welcome to anotherΒ video. we are here in the southΒ Β

part of indonesia, Rote island and we're onΒ the very south coast of Rote island soΒ Β

we can't get closer to Australia than what we areΒ right now. it's straight over that way behind meΒ Β

and we are trying to get into this place calledΒ Oeseli. it's a tiny little lagoon in here and onΒ Β

the maps it looks very very uh shallowΒ to get into it's very weather protectedΒ Β

and very beautiful and there's a coupleΒ of good other little places to go standΒ Β

up paddling and we really want to go in thereΒ but the maps don't tell us anything there's noΒ Β

channel markers or anything like that so whatΒ we've done is anchored out front here andΒ Β

eight meters of water it's about an hour beforeΒ high tide and we're going to get in the dinghy andΒ Β

go and look at it but first i'm going to actuallyΒ fly the drone over it to get an idea from the topΒ Β

where the channel sort of goes then we're goingΒ to go in with snorkel mask going to swim a bitΒ Β

in the sketchy zones and drop a weighted line overΒ the side and just measure sort of how deep it isΒ Β

how are you feeling about this well i'm feelingΒ okay i just hope it's gonna be able because it'sΒ Β

new moon it's not full moon so maybe it'sΒ not the best high tide to go but anyway it'sΒ Β

good to just uh having a look around evenΒ if we can't just to watch a bit how it isΒ Β

yeah that was the other other point uh weΒ need two and a half meters minimum of waterΒ Β

so you can only we can only go in hereΒ on a full moon tide or a new moon tideΒ Β

and then either we only stay two days maximumΒ or two weeks until the next big tide so we'reΒ Β

only going to stay two days this time because weΒ need to be back in umbrala for the the trimaranΒ Β

race on the weekend so who's going to go in thereΒ and check it out anyway here's the drone footage

so what do you think about well yeah it doesn'tΒ look very promising from the drone to be honestΒ Β

uh the sand channel just goes in and then stopsΒ and then you can see here there's uh fish trapsΒ Β

stone walls that they've built just on theΒ drone footage i'd be like no we're not going inΒ Β

there but we will go and look with the dinghy andΒ because they could be three metres under the waterΒ Β

right now i'm hoping so we're gonna go and checkΒ it out anyway but not a good first impression

shitty end fell every time i see it pisses me off

so we're gonna use the white belt of um divingΒ to see how deep it is but for me it looks alreadyΒ Β

quite shallow here it's still not high tide eitherΒ it should come up another 15 20 centimeters yet

two and a half to almost three meters

so all of these little plastic bottles and ropesΒ are for the culture of agaga the whole island ofΒ Β

roti they are doing this culture and sending itΒ on the chinese market he seems to quite liking itΒ Β

but the problem is with the favorite isΒ if you you sail too close and you getΒ Β

tangled in this kind of ropesΒ it can be really dangerous

it's all the same depth pretty much it'sΒ around two and a half to three metersΒ Β

at nearly high tide so it's goingΒ to come up slightly more so it's notΒ Β

too bad but we're out here we'd have aboutΒ this much under the bottom of the keelΒ Β

which if it's calm it's all right andΒ it is calm so yeah you think it's enoughΒ Β

yeah so we checked the bay uhΒ it's all around three metersΒ Β

i find that a little bit sketchy but i am notΒ the captain a captain seems to say it's okayΒ Β

and anyway i'm quite happy he took this decisionΒ because we are for one week in a really reallyΒ Β

encourage and i i am dreaming a littleΒ bit of a very calm to spend one night

yeah i think it's uh it's doable i normallyΒ always want to have at least a meter of waterΒ Β

under the keel uh and this situation i won't haveΒ we have two metres to the water line um and hereΒ Β

there's three or four spots where it's two and aΒ half meters so there's not much leeway there butΒ Β

yeah i think it's durable and uh the good thingΒ is it's calming there if there was any sort ofΒ Β

waves and the boat was going up and down halfΒ a meter obviously i wouldn't go for it butΒ Β

the tide's still rising for another hourΒ and another 10 centimeters coming still soΒ Β

you know if we do touch something we can probablyΒ yeah it's a bit sketchy to be honest but um yeah iΒ Β

think we'll be fine you know what's life withoutΒ a little bit of risk we'll give it a crack

so we passed the more sketchy part i think butΒ we have to take care it's quite scary becauseΒ Β

you can really see it's super shallow but inΒ fact it's three meters so it's gonna be okayΒ Β

but yeah like your instincts feelingsΒ are like it's not really a good idea

what a nice and peacefulΒ place is some traditional hit

a lovely cam bay i'm sure it's gonnaΒ be more comfortable to stay here

this year we didn't have a lot of occasion toΒ explore in nature and yeah that was super goodΒ Β

it's super calm what is super clear and yeah theΒ landscape is quite crazy here a super nice moment

yeah this place is called telaga nuana and it'sΒ quite well known i guess amongst indonesianΒ Β

tourists and i guess people who came to roti youΒ know tourists before but there's no one here nowΒ Β

and it's quite quite spectacular one of the firstΒ times we've used our indiana paddleboards thisΒ Β

year just because we haven't really beenΒ in in like flat water situations awesomeΒ Β

hope you like these shots of the uh littleΒ tilaga nuana they're pretty crazy to see howΒ Β

this channel changed pretty good to come and lookΒ at it now because we didn't take the deepest partΒ Β

over the fish traps where the ladies are sittingΒ now we went actually straight over top of them andΒ Β

there would have been a deeper part but it's okayΒ we didn't touch anything but it must have beenΒ Β

pretty close yeah there's a lot of water movingΒ through here there's a big current down thereΒ Β

10 20 centimetres of water now yeah definitelyΒ a full tide operation and uh probably in threeΒ Β

or four more days time we wouldn't getΒ well we won't get out so we have to leaveΒ Β

the day after tomorrow's the last day withΒ a bit of good tide anyway interesting stuffΒ Β

it's a lot of red and white yeahΒ we are in osle a tiny villageΒ Β

and i think the last national day they decide toΒ paint all the village with the colors of indonesiaΒ Β

meraputi red and white and it'sΒ quite nice it's a bit weird butΒ Β

it make it like a happy villageΒ to have all these colors around

they didn't um paint the cows no they didn't paintΒ the cows but they paint the coconut trees theyΒ Β

paint the fans the houses the rocks i think that'sΒ already a lot yeah you lucky cow you could haveΒ Β

been red and white would have been a red frontΒ and a white back or half and half up and down
