Close encounters with Crocodiles are not on our bucket list, in fact we hope to never see them! We spent a couple of days anchored in a beautiful remote bay, swimming in the amazing cool waters of a nearby river, catching a few fish and generally just enjoyed being out exploring again. One evening we spoke with a group of fishermen who told us the whole area as well as the river we'd been swimming in, was well know to have many crocodiles, some 6m long!
We felt quite lucky to survive, ignorance is bliss I guess.
The next day we sailed to another bay, along the way seeing a Whale Shark for the first time.
Dolphins greeted us at the next anchorage.

All right guys, welcome to another episode. As you might be able to notice we are rolling
0:19
around. We're anchored up here in a pretty exposed anchorage and I don't know what
0:22
it's called, it's some remote place. Weta island you'll see a map here, Weta island is
0:29
the first island of the Maluku province and it's a pretty small island in its own right.
0:35
we left Alor i think four or five days ago now stopped at a few little places along the way had
0:41
an amazing time saw some really really cool stuff sort of a little break from filming we just you
0:47
know we've been pretty much on it filming every every day we'd um put out a video every week for
0:52
the last three four months so i'm gonna do one today show you what we're what we're doing here
0:57
it's so good to be just back on the sailing grind what do you reckon well yeah it's quite
1:03
nice if i'm not talking about the heat because we are back close to the ecuador so more jungle
1:10
super humidity in the air so the landscapes are super good but it's really really hot and full of
1:16
mosquitoes so i have to be cover again that's uh a big point you'll see in these videos after leaving
1:23
roti and lombok and all those islands down there and the sort of barren arid landscape which
1:28
is beautiful in its own right but now we're back in the lush green just massive forests
1:34
and yeah there's no one around wetara is very very lightly inhabited hardly any villages no
1:39
roads whatsoever so the villagers only have like boat access and we haven't really seen
1:43
any people hardly the odd fishermen but um pretty awesome to be back in this condition
1:47
though really really cool like we enjoyed the social life and all that in roti and the
1:52
restaurants and having the odd beer and that and now it's so good to be back just anchored out and
1:56
just like discovering we really feel like we're discovering stuff again so anyway enjoy this video
2:03
so from aloha our friends dragon pig and we met in lombok just join us and we are sailing
2:09
together for a while and they're gonna join us for this adventure at the river we're gonna feed them
2:22
good morning
2:48
in the jungle
3:04
oh we reached the end of the road with the dinghy it's a little rapid here so we just
3:08
pulled it up and we're gonna walk up the river a bit further this place is incredible it's not
3:13
very often you get proper flowing fresh water rivers in indonesia in the parts we've been to
3:21
look at all these swallows flying around wow what a freaking amazing place we're gonna cool off
3:26
what i didn't know at this particular moment was that there are crocodiles in river a this
3:32
fish here just see them everywhere unfortunately just back down the river there greg and kik
3:39
had a carburetor problems so they i gave them my tools and they're trying to fix it
3:44
now so hopefully they'll join us up here but we're going to walk further up the river now
3:49
but first i'm going to fly the drone and show you the entrance of this river system and then
3:52
i'll use it to look further up the river to see how far we can walk
4:26
foreign
4:36
well we didn't get too far we just got around there in the jungle and then there
4:40
was just a really deep section that we couldn't couldn't pass without swimming and this backpack
4:47
i've had it for a couple of years now on the boat and it's been amazing yeti one fully waterproof
4:51
to 50 meters it's got a tiny hole in it now and i just got all my camera gear drone binoculars
4:58
everything in there i didn't want to risk going around there and swimming with it and getting
5:02
water in it we got back here and the dinghy's gone pulled it up here it's over there now so i
5:10
have to swim over and get it it's all good though maybe luckily for me as i was just about to swim
5:15
over and get the dinghy in the deepest darkest hole of the little corner of the river there uh
5:21
greg and kirk had managed to fix their outboard and were slowly motoring up the river and they
5:25
came around the corner just as i was about to go in even in this place far far from everything
5:30
without internet in full nature you can still find a little bit of plastic it's mainly packs
5:36
of powder for washing clothes so you can imagine the locals are doing the washing in the river but
5:44
yeah it's quite sad to found that in this so fresh water river far from everything
5:50
greg had bought a fishing rod with him and just decided to have a little flick over in
5:53
the corner there and first cast boom fish on maybe eat it that's awesome fish hold on
6:03
it's a massive fish
6:14
that's a massive fish yeah look it's uh it's got big teeth too
6:17
got wood i put it on the head oh yeah take a picture no i'm not quick
6:30
is that first cast yeah that was literally toss it in i wonder if anything will get on and it took
6:36
maybe two seconds what's happening here decided to
6:39
pull a spinner back down the river and got this after about two minutes
6:44
not quite sure what it is what do you reckon that is
6:57
yeah it does look something like that i wish i had um
7:00
this fish had super sharp spikes and right here made three little holes in the dinghy
7:10
a little brown like a little brown one that's a good fish
7:18
that's too easy just tie this pull this little lure down the river and he gave a good fight too
7:25
all right just put him out of his misery because we are back in the river the crocodile trap was
7:30
not enough we are in another one for fishing so we've got confirmations from these guys then
7:37
there's crocodiles of six meters around awesome i love the ideas of vernon and greg to come fishing
7:49
vagus
7:59
[ __ ] cut i just spiked myself right under the nail like a freaking vietnamese prisoner of war
8:10
fish is going to get eaten but he got the last word there
8:25
yeah so i've gotten some infected war wounds again i'm pretty relaxed on that sort of thing
8:30
i just get a little cut somewhere and on the coral or whatever and i always put some antiseptic on it
8:36
right away but then i just sort of keep doing things going in the water and everything and
8:40
i'm not covering it not covering them up and and i seem to handle it fine but then once i've got
8:46
enough i think it just builds up to this effect that we're okay now it's too much and then they
8:50
all get infected on like within three four hours it's gone from nothing to boom something and
8:55
that's well we're on the equator but yeah i gotta be careful right now i've got um antibiotics with
9:00
me which i've always cleaned this up in the past but i don't like to take them so trying to yeah
9:07
get marie to do some healing and she's got some organic stuff and trying to cover them up and
9:13
i'll try and keep out of the water but the good uh way to keep out of the water here is to know
9:17
that there's crocodiles so yeah now it's got stabbed under the fingernail by this bloody fish
9:22
gonna taste good this fish i'm gonna eat him now have a look at it don't watch yourself again
9:35
beautiful one it was more beautiful when it's alive though obviously but
9:39
we need some food so this is probably our last day in veda island that was quite good to see
9:48
the jungle again and being in a wild place but personally it's a bit too wild for me
9:55
like the quantity of bags all the crocodiles around we didn't really enjoy the water or a
10:02
little bit because we were not knowing they were there but that was quite risky so yeah i hope
10:07
the next place is gonna be a little bit more safe and more easy to enjoy outdoor activities
10:19
m
10:37
beautiful phillip
10:41
this morning we are leaving the anchorage with the river we are still along weather
10:52
and this is definitely the more boring moment on the boat than i ever had no not the most
11:01
point ever but this season this season maybe but i think it's the more boring i ever had it's rolly
11:09
we have not enough winter sailing we have to use the engine it's the bug winds so we have the
11:15
smell of the gas so yeah it's not really fun and we have 20 miles to go which isn't long but four
11:24
hours of this rolliness is just a bit boring and we're not sure the next anchorage if it's going
11:30
to be fully swell like this so it could be we have to do an overnighter to get to the next island and
11:36
then it would be [ __ ] yeah but yeah is what it is and we left a little a little bit sooner
11:43
this uh quite nice anchorage because um when we talked to the villagers yesterday they told
11:50
to us then this place is full of crocodile in the bay and in the river we went to fishing so
11:58
we decided it was maybe not a good idea to explore more we took energy we took enough risk because
12:07
like going swimming we planned on going up there again today and swimming and spearfishing the
12:12
fish we saw in the river and doing some washing and then when we found it's full of crocodiles
12:18
um it's it's more of a tease than anything because they're like swimming in fresh water is something
12:25
amazing and novelty for us and if the river's there and we know it's nice and clear and it's
12:30
beautiful but we can't swim in it anymore then it's even worse so it's just better to leave
12:35
yeah we survived the crocodiles but we didn't want to give it a second try oh definitely no the only
12:42
good thing is it's not too hot because it's cloudy today the last few days have been the hottest that
12:47
we've ever had in our lives i think it's uh just crazy change of season heavy crazy crazy hot it's
12:55
like we're like like monks and nuns we're not even touching each other it's just too hot you're just
13:01
like oh sticky no not nice even after a shower two minutes after you're already full of sweat
13:09
and sticky it's terrible just hot and that's what was so nice about being in the river so knowing
13:15
it's there but not being able to go in it is just like i don't know a locked ice cream fridge
13:22
you know it's there but you can't have it especially for valentine's day he has really a
13:26
problem with ice cream i think and swimming in rivers and swimming in groups anyway
13:48
well we're cruising here between this little islands and uh i saw this black thing in the
13:53
water and thought it was a manta ray and we went next to it and uh turns out it's a whale shark
14:00
and then i had to put on the fishing line so i sort of lost him but i think
14:03
we just found him again maybe let me go next to him and have a look
14:13
oh yeah it's right under the boat
14:21
he doesn't give a [ __ ] we should go in the water
14:27
how cool is that super big i'm so surprised wow
14:38
so after a bit of a eventful motor sail that day we arrived in a new place and
14:44
nice and calm and a massive family of dolphins were buzzing around the bay fishing and playing
14:50
and so filmed them for a while and took that as a good sign that there was no crocodiles anywhere
14:55
at all for sure not so we went for a nice big swim and checked out the coral and yeah it was
15:01
pretty amazing to get back in the water and have clear clean vision and yeah had a great time there
15:17
so
15:30
so
15:44
so
16:26
so
17:02
uh
17:38
all right so we've come around to a little village called loiopa
17:42
like lyopa it's about three miles around the bay from where we're anchored
17:47
and there's a village here but we couldn't anchor here it was too deep so um we've come
17:51
around here and gordon kicks boat here they are the big mother ship what is it better yeah
17:58
beneteau 461 and uh we made it around here just now we're going to go to the village and try and
18:03
get some fresh fruit and veg because we're sort of running out i'm getting trying to get some
18:07
bananas and stuff but the fishermen have been going by our boat said that there's stuff here
18:12
in the village so we're going to come around and see what they got anyway let's let's look
18:20
be ready for him it's okay
18:52
good one
18:58
so this village name is leopa and uh we're walking around
19:02
i bought some diesel but it turned out to be three times as expensive as normally so i
19:07
only got one jerrycan instead of two but that's all good it's pretty remote here so they've just
19:12
i guess they get charged a lot more but anyway these guys are walking around um getting us
19:18
some lemons and some pisang which is banana and maybe some papaya and uh yeah some vegetables
19:28
so it's pretty funny here these guys don't really see any bula any white people at all
19:33
that's super shy to begin with but they're starting to come out now
19:37
and uh it's pretty cool that all the kids are looking around like we're aliens
19:42
it's pretty cool though there's a couple of older guys that are pretty friendly
20:01
oh there's lots of small ones
20:14
this one's ready huh yeah all right well we found some bananas straight off the tree
20:19
i gotta work out the prize now
20:24
little piggy
20:27
now this is the woodworking house
20:36
i always ask how many people live in these villages and they don't know they just know
20:39
how many houses there are so there's 80 houses there also 80 families i guess that means but any
20:45
family can be from i don't know three generations so maybe 10 or 12 people i guess so yeah there's
20:51
80 houses 80 families in this village leopard and a bunch of them seem to be just leaving now
20:59
they're packing up and they i guess they're going working somewhere for a few months they're taking
21:03
a lot of baggage with them and and moving out so i guess they go away because here this this is
21:09
isolated there's no roads in or out there's no power there's no telephone and there's no
21:15
harbor as such so the boats just load i'll show you in a minute i'm just walking there now but
21:19
very very isolated village very um far away from i guess calaba is the closest town with an airport
21:27
and that's about a three four hundred miles past three or four hundred kilometer
21:36
so this is the harbour down here salamat jalan
21:41
have a good journey and yeah these people are loading their luggage onto the boats
21:52
so i go they go out in this little boat here and then the furthest one away there's a
21:57
big blue boat and that just arrived while we were coming in and that's what they'll go to
22:02
i don't know where maybe they go to sulawesi makassar or somewhere i guess they go there some
22:07
of them probably go to university there or to go and work or something but this is how they travel
22:12
so they've been loading these little boats now for an hour since we've been here just
22:16
maybe 20 or 30 people leaving with all their gear with them that fun oh [ __ ] yeah
22:34
so that's the end of this video guys hope you enjoyed that it was a little bit random but uh
22:38
just a bit of a sort of selection of shots from along this island of weta uh the most
22:44
remote we've been for quite a long time but uh that's what it's gonna be like now for the
22:48
next couple of months probably yeah gotta say thanks to the patrons as always you guys are
22:54
legends all of you and uh thanks very much for the support thanks for appreciating the hard
22:59
work that goes into these videos and well all of your viewers really a lot of people commenting and
23:04
and clicking like and all that stuff really helps to be honest and sharing the videos
23:08
and um we've been hanging around the 25 000 k range now for what seems like ever it seems like
23:16
it's blocked we can't get there so if any of you guys aren't subscribed this would be a great time
23:21
to just help us get over that thing and that'd be awesome it really helps us out guys it's um
23:26
really allows us to do this and show you what we're up to every week and
23:31
in any way we'll um probably the next time we're gonna have internet will be about two
23:34
weeks from now so it might be a bit random the amount of videos that are coming out but in the
23:39
end they'll be the same amount we probably just might put out two a week or something if we can't
23:43
get every uh tuesday i think we're putting them out before but anyway you guys will that's the
23:49
whole point push the notifications about and then you'll get a you'll get an email every time okay
23:55
guys see you next week maybe it's somewhere we don't know where there's internet guys see ya
