We set off on a 280nm passage to the Banda Islands, Indonesia and the conditions were mild. Mid afternoon the squalls started piling up on the horizon and we just knew we would get smashed! Should have immediately gone to 2nd reef and ended up getting way over-powered. Lesson learnt I guess. Otherwise we had a very enjoyable passage, its been awhile since we have been offshore and I was more relaxed than ever and Marie also had her best passage ever.
Gotta love sailing.

Good morning everyone, today we're gonna do a passage of 250 miles and i'm a bit worried
0:29
about it, but it's okay. Right now we are in Roma island, a little island far from everything in
0:36
the middle of ocean and we prepared some food to be ready for these two days of crossing.
0:58
This is my first bread sourdough, I tried to do a starter with the flour here. I was
1:05
not really confident but it seems to work we have to try it now vernon gonna fly the drone to show
1:12
you a little bit the bay we are and we're gonna pull the anchor and go in the ocean
1:25
we've got some trouble with the anchor we we were a bit scared because we had a little bit
1:29
the chain on rocks so we were like maybe we are um just stuck in rocks the chain stuck in rocks
1:37
but in fact no we are in old ropes and we don't want to go in the water because we
1:43
know there's some big crocodiles here so we're not gonna try to sort it out ripe stripe stripes
1:51
let's get this big nuts we probably could have anchored like this yeah
2:15
all right we are free we are free
2:22
okay now we are free start for new adventures
2:50
all right well we're off we're about i don't know a couple miles out
2:55
from the island we left and uh it's pretty calm we've got not much wind i would say probably
3:00
about seven eight knots and straight from behind but we've got to set up wing on wing
3:07
there's a bit of a sort of a chop at the moment maybe caused by the island so it might
3:11
might even out a bit but uh yeah we're doing 4.8 knots and that's fine we've got 235 miles
3:19
to go so that means i don't know at this speed it's about 20 uh 48 hours i guess so
3:25
we'll just arrive sometime in the morning so if we go a bit slower we'll get there in the
3:29
afternoon if we get there a bit earlier we'll all slow down a bit so it should work out all right
3:33
this will be our longest passage this year so i'm pretty stoked to just to get to see a little
3:38
bit we haven't had internet now for about a week so i couldn't check the weather or anything but
3:43
um it's just been nice to be off grid now i've read i think three books and in five days maybe
3:50
and uh did some spear fishing caught a bunch of fish it's been really nice being out here again
3:56
you know it's been really cool i feel really relaxed now more relaxed than the whole year
4:00
and uh yeah we don't know what's going on in the world we don't know the craziness is
4:04
this happening at the moment and we're pretty happy about that we're just enjoying ourselves
4:24
how's it going so far that's okay i'm still seeing the land so i'm feeling okay
4:32
but i'm gonna be here now from there it's gonna be different
4:42
i guess we're about six seven miles out now we're still cruising along nicely uh
4:47
i don't know five five and a half knots the sea's sort of starting to get a bit of shape to it now
4:54
is uh we've still got about a half knot current against us and uh once that stops we might
5:01
actually have to put the sails a bit smaller because if we go faster than five and a half not
5:07
average we're actually going to get there in the night which isn't really good so we're probably
5:11
we don't want to be doing six six and a half knots but we will just keep going at this
5:15
speed for the first few hours just to get out there and then prefer to slow down during the
5:22
night because i always reap at night anyway so during the days if we go faster than the average
5:28
then at night we can slow right down just sail fast enough that it's comfortable but it's not
5:33
too rolly but you know if there are any squads or anything come up we're already reefed and already
5:39
going slowly so that's the plan yeah it's just nice i'm getting through another book hopefully in
5:45
banda well actually we didn't tell you we're going to bandanada that's uh our destination it's an um
5:51
we don't really know much about it but i guess uh portuguese and then dutch place from a long
5:57
time ago at one stage it was the world's biggest producer nutmeg i think maybe cloves and stuff as
6:03
well but big history there and uh it's also a really famous diving place with
6:10
hammerhead sharks and things so we might stay a little while we don't know uh but i'm really
6:15
looking forward to getting there anyway it should be should be a fun place to visit also waiting to
6:21
go in banda we are more interested by the volcano there's a volcano there's a big volcano a live one
6:28
yeah a live one oh well the last eruption was was in 80s i think but it's still uh i think active
6:35
and some places the ocean is hot sometimes i think oh cool all right didn't know that
6:56
spy novel
7:23
so
7:33
so
8:11
wallets than any kind of glow make them melting
8:31
there you go
8:49
alright
9:22
beautiful sailing right now 7.3 7.4 knots no wave boats going good no current a bit of steering
9:40
it up
10:00
so normally around uh midday one o'clock i get the temperature heats up and the squalls sort of start
10:08
and now i was downstairs and it's been just amazing sailing today we've been
10:12
just cracking along like high sixes sevens flat seas going too fast really but whatever
10:19
we'll stay down the night time and uh marie's been up here on watch
10:26
and i came up and like this behind me
10:35
now that's a school but uh it just formed out of nothing there was literally blue skies there
10:43
i don't know 30 minutes ago 45 minutes ago maybe and we're not quite sure if
10:49
it's coming this way or go or just form there and going away from us but
10:56
i would say it's coming this way
10:58
so it's definitely coming this way it's definitely bigger now i still can't really see any wind in
11:03
it but i'm going to put a reef in just in case because it is quite a big heavy front throw first
11:21
so
11:34
oh
11:59
all righty ready for anything
12:06
so yeah we went a little bit forward the wind speaks
12:13
so bella is smelling the headset
12:21
all right all right so there was a bit of wind in it
12:26
now we're about to get the rain we are doing almost nine nights
12:34
yeah we're flying we're doing 9.8 this thing
12:41
we're going to outrun it we're going to go faster than the school
12:47
we're all good
12:51
i think it was a good timing of putting the reef in yeah
13:00
it's actually above us now the worst of
13:05
all right it
13:33
well listen lund again probably should have put the second reef in right away
13:38
so now we are off to you because we were getting a bit too fast with the
13:46
the wind of the school so we're gonna enjoy this camp time and slowing down to
13:52
rerun the lunch we prepared before leaving so we're gonna enjoy some chicken and rice
14:01
we don't heat too very often here because we're not doing crossings but
14:06
it's such a remarkable difference like three minutes ago we were smashing around in the squall
14:10
and and healed over and now we're just straight up and down and bobbing a little bit and it's just
14:15
easy to cook and uh yeah good practice to heave too it's very very easy and simple to do and it's
14:20
a skill that once you've learned to it's so good at night if you i don't know if you just need a
14:25
break make a coffee or something it's pretty handy before we do a crossing marie likes to
14:32
cook stuff and get ready like it's actually really good because we have a fridge we have
14:36
a few boxes of food ready we can just just heat them up and um yeah because marie's such
14:41
a good cook it always tastes good and smells good and it definitely makes you feel better
14:45
having a nice plate full of food to dig into instead of just some noodles or whatever
14:50
you can come up with thanks bud you're welcome this one is chicken ala kick marie
15:01
uh yeah it's roasted chicken with some ginger garlic chicken tomatoes onions
15:11
and the chicken was was kindly given to us by by kik because she knew our freezer broke and
15:18
she had a lot of chicken in the freezer and uh gave us a couple of legs which was very nice
15:23
thanks kick backspin and also thanks for the fridge where we're using it every day
15:39
squall's all gone it's gone that way
15:52
yeah we'll uh finish our meal and wash up the dishes and then uh spin the boat around and get
15:58
moving again but yeah we've been going uh about two knots over our needed speed for the whole day
16:04
so far so um it's actually nice just to stop and have a break i'll probably make a coffee as well
16:10
and doing little passage like this it's still a bit uh a mission for me i'm always a bit nervous
16:18
before and even if i am amazingly surprised by this one especially in bandar sea like it was
16:24
super calm and quite comfortable and i didn't feel really bad now we are stopped in the middle
16:31
of nowhere and having 360 view of just sea and no land anywhere it's really a weird feeling
16:39
i can really feel in my guts that it's not really natural for me all right moving again
16:48
probably should have shown you how he come out of a heave too we'll do that another time though um
16:54
yeah basically just let the head sheet go over the other side spin around then pull it back to
16:58
where it was and off you go and uh we're up yeah we're doing five and a half knots there's not so
17:03
much wind now i think the squad took a lot of the wind there's another one over my shoulder
17:08
there you can see that's that'll be coming probably in half an hour we'll have that one
17:12
with us but it doesn't look very aggressive so i'll probably get overpowered again anyway yeah
17:19
ripping along again that was a nice little break in the action and yeah it's uh well
17:24
it's about 2 p.m now so we've still got a few hours of light and we'll make some more miles
17:51
hmm
18:07
oh
18:20
good morning the sun just came up
18:25
oh no maybe an hour ago now i've seen a bit of a sleep but uh beautiful conditions oh
18:35
little kettle's boiling i'll run down and get that
18:51
yeah as i said better for uh conditions right now we're doing seven nights and very calm seas
18:58
beautiful had a bit of a uh just a bit of a not not rough night just up and down
19:05
um indonesia this time of year it's it's not tradewind season so it's uh in and out here we got
19:13
easterlies we got westerlies we got northerlies we got squalls we got rain
19:19
so we were motoring we were sailing we were reefed down we were reefed up all over the place but um
19:26
yeah i think we stayed on about you know the speed we needed to stay on and
19:33
now we're going a lot faster we need to but probably going to be calm during the day again
19:38
today but uh yeah all good that's sort of 24 hours done now another 24 hours we'll be there
19:44
it's fun though we're really enjoying it it's just yeah we're just out there we haven't seen another
19:49
ship we haven't seen anything we saw a couple of dolphins maybe yesterday a few birds in that but
19:55
no fishermen no ships nothing around no airplanes obviously here and it's just nice
20:01
to be out here for sure love it we've been um sort of coast topping this whole season so it's
20:07
pretty nice just to be out in the ocean just uh yeah watching the waves how was your night
20:15
i was super lucky melon was not really able to sleep correctly so
20:20
i had almost all the time i want to sleep so i'm super fresh this morning
20:26
i can't really complain it was good night for me better better than for you yeah
20:34
yeah i forgot that actually i didn't really sleep at all i did i slept a bit here and there but
20:39
i know i wasn't really we were doing three hour watches and then i think after the well my first
20:44
off watch i wasn't really sleeping and after an hour i just said to mauricio i want to go back
20:49
to bed i wasn't feeling it and then i just started uh well i basically solo sailed the rest tonight i
20:55
just set my alarm for 20 minutes and uh just slept 20 minutes looked around 20 minutes and i probably
21:01
got i've probably got three or four hours actually all together so it wasn't too bad but i have a
21:05
couple of little sleeps today during the day and all good how's that coconut super tasty and we
21:12
have a lot of meat inside so it's gonna be a super good breakfast there you go let me have a bit
21:28
this is our last fresh coconut huh yeah
21:32
nice one huh there will be a bando tomorrow i think they make coconuts there
21:47
well the sun's just gone down on our second day at sea uh probably around 12 hours we'll be yeah
21:53
pulling up to banda it's been such a beautiful day today can't believe it this is just a dream
21:58
day at sea really and uh really what i needed so relaxing just cruising along good speed you know
22:05
there's a little there's some waves up now but we've just got pressure on the sails so it's not
22:10
not an uncomfortable movement it's beautiful marie's downstairs having a sleep i'm going to
22:16
get some dinner ready soon but i just wanted to give a shout out to the patrons no i don't click
22:21
off the video this isn't the end this is still uh still a fair bit of this video to come but
22:25
i wanted to give the um patrons a bit of a shout out right now uh obviously we wouldn't be making
22:30
all these videos and putting the time and effort that we do into them without the uh yeah the the
22:37
generous contributions from you all uh really really appreciated and also uh

23:55
the colors are better in reality you can promise so we are close to benda we can see the volcano
24:04
the night was quite calm we had good winds then i had to feel a bit the head cell to not going too
24:13
fast it was really possible to be here in the middle of the night but no point and now the
24:21
light is coming the sky is amazing all pink quite excited to visit these new islands full of history
24:30
and i'm quite curious to try some spices here too so yeah i'm a bit tired but the crossing was okay
24:40
i had quite a few time that's probably one of the best i ever did and thanks to vernon we did a lot
24:50
and yeah can't wait to see a bit more about this new place early morning i think it's
24:56
about 5 30 now maybe close to six sun's still not up but it's getting there and yeah we arrived at
25:04
the perfect time yeah i would say overall it was a pretty perfect passage pretty proud of
25:10
marie this is her best passage so far for sure didn't get too scared didn't have to be
25:16
sick it didn't even really feel that sick and um they're pretty proud of myself we
25:22
you know did the planning perfectly and judged uh the distances and got here at the right time and
25:30
shahelian once again got us here good little ship nothing broken just super solid just
25:38
flying i could have we could have got here eight hours earlier if if i'd let her run how fast she
25:43
wanted to go but uh kept her in check and um got here at the right time and yeah pretty happy well
25:50
really happy actually we're further north again now we're into new adventures we're into new
25:56
cultures different part of indonesia and left that behind us and we had a great time down there and
26:01
now we're into it feels like a new zone sort of so really really happy stoke to uh yeah check out
26:09
bender there's a as marie said a lot of history here we haven't really looked into too much
26:14
what's here but i saw on the on the map there's a couple of old ports portuguese or dutch i'm
26:18
not sure um and i've read a lot about this place over the years the spice trades and everything and
26:24
uh pretty cool stuff to get into i think so i don't know how long we're gonna be here maybe
26:30
one or two weeks but uh we'll definitely bring you at least one video from here and hopefully
26:35
some underwater stuff because apparently that's pretty incredible here anyway i hope you enjoyed
26:40
the video um we'll see you next week as we've been offline for the past two weeks the videos
26:45
have been a bit inconsistent but um we should be back on regular schedule from here cheers
