How can an offshore overnight sailing passage be boring? Maybe we've just been doing too many of them lately but this one seemed to have no highlights. Just a simple, safe and easy cruise to our next destination.

In this week's video we left Banda, sailed
0:03
a very casual 180 miles over to Tual in the Kei Islands, very casual, very casual sail. Enjoy!
0:19
G'day guys. Welcome to another episode. Bye bye Banda Neira, beautiful place, had an amazing time here.
0:27
We're heading out into the ocean towards the Kei islands, Tual is the city there. It's a passage of
0:34
around 180 miles so it'll be an overnight and the next day something like that we're not quite sure
0:40
and it looks like it's going to be light winds and mostly downwinds so that's like not a good
0:45
combination of downwind and light wind but we'll see how we go we sort of need to go
0:50
fast to get there before sunset tomorrow but we'll see what we get anyway enjoy the video
1:18
first sailing of the year we are the first january and we are downwind going five knots super easy
1:35
so this is sunset time we had a good sailing day good motor selling day because
1:42
with the downwind it was not enough strong to turn off the engine a lot
1:49
and as you can see i didn't put any sun cream as a newbie i know i should do because i know exactly
1:58
what's happening in the sunny day when i we are sailing but it's okay and so we are both super red
2:06
today and i think it's a bit because it's the day after new year and we were a bit tired and lazy
2:14
so we didn't really take any precaution with the sun and add a lot of nuts in there
2:27
and the birds and i can imagine that this night gonna be super calm if you stay like this
2:35
no squall no big clouds around so i think the watch is gonna be quite easy tonight
2:43
yep as marie said we got a little bit sunburnt today i haven't actually looked in the mirror
2:48
but i can just feel it we're like gonna ah it's like crackly yeah big rookie like i don't know
2:55
it's like we've never been on the ocean before i guess but no sunscreen lying out in the sun
3:01
it was nice it was enjoyable but yeah pretty sudden cooked now
3:22
well this is day two early morning and yes squalls all around us we're only catching the
3:30
side of this one and it's not too bad but uh got one reef in the main well which i've had all night
3:37
and uh yeah i just filled up the head so till the school passes this boat goes really well
3:43
on main alone it's a main mainsail driven boat so if it's just going to be for a short time
3:51
it's sort of easier just to fill away the headsail than put another reef in the main
3:55
um and yeah we're still doing 6.8 knots just with the main so you know it does pretty well
4:05
it's a little bit harder on the autopilot it has it's got a little bit more weather helm with just
4:08
the main because it's a little bit unbalanced but if it's just for 10 15 minutes while the
4:12
school passes then i can sleep out some headsail again it works it seems to work better and so
4:18
last night was actually really good during the day we sort of just motor sailed there was just
4:25
i don't know we were completely down windows like eight knots of wind but
4:29
you know like going very slowly so we're motor sailing and um and then after we'd had some dinner
4:37
i just it just slowly picked up the wind a little bit i guess to 14 15 knots and turned the engine
4:43
off and we sailed the whole night through no squalls otherwise one squad with a bit of wind and
4:48
rain but nothing really so the whole night through it sort of six three six five knots and uh just
4:56
beautiful night actually marie stayed sleeping and i just stayed on the bean bag and did 20 minute
5:03
just had my phone on my chest with the alarm going and 20 minutes sleeps and i sort of slept
5:08
the whole night as well i didn't see there was one ship that passed about five miles away and that
5:13
was it and it was a beautiful night of sailing it was really good i already had in my head that we
5:19
were going to be just motoring the whole way so i was sort of like yeah ready for that but it was
5:25
such a nice surprise just to sail the whole way and yeah we haven't had the engine on since six
5:30
o'clock last night so it's pretty good we put a sail the whole way we've got 20 miles to go
5:38
i'm going to this little island here
5:44
down in this anchorage
5:48
well scratch what i just said about not putting another wreath in there's a big squall behind us
5:59
and yeah in front of us as well so i so i decided to put a second reef in
6:07
and then let some head sail out
6:12
so we're yeah we're doing six and a half and very very chill i could let more head sell out
6:17
now for sure but the one behind us is catching up quite quick so i'll just let it play out
6:21
see how we go it's raining now which is nice and cool at least
6:49
land ho land ho indeed just over here i don't know what the island's called but uh
6:56
i looked on the satellite maps and it looks like there's a couple good
6:59
anchorages in here that'll be pretty calm and uh we're about five miles away now
7:07
so we've done 175 miles actually quite good time we left at 10 in the morning and it's
7:15
12 now so 26 hours 170 miles and the first eight of it we're motoring slowly so yeah
7:23
we've gone pretty good actually we're um wing on wing now doing seven in a
7:29
bit pretty nice pretty comfortable and uh yeah just just powering along shahelion once again
7:40
on a passage we have never once had anything happen it's just amazing she just keeps going
7:45
obviously electronics are starting to fail a little bit we've got no freezer no fridge
7:51
no wind instruments the batteries have gone to um chart plotters on its way out
8:00
but you know everything i mean everything we really need works still the boat sails the
8:04
autopilot works perfectly and uh yeah we're all good i look forward to seeing what this
8:13
new anchorage is going to be like it's not the most sunny of days but it's actually nice when
8:17
you're on passage not to have a bluebird day just because it's too hot especially with a tail
8:21
wind you know you don't have much apparent wind to cool you down but yeah it's been a
8:26
nice passage anyway marie's feeling a bit sick today i'm not seasick just feeling a bit rubbish
8:33
um yeah i don't know she she's slept a lot she's she's she's all right she's just not
8:41
feeling very strong but uh we'll probably stay in this anchorage a day or two and
8:46
relax and uh get some good food and probably not drinking enough that might be it but um
8:53
we'll see i'll show you the anchorage when we get there okay we've arrived
8:58
at our hopeful destination for the day this island over here behind me is called pulauri
9:07
the other ones i don't know but it looks very beautiful nice colors see some houses in the
9:11
distance there some locals there's another bay up in here with a bunch of houses it's a pretty small
9:18
channel we're going into here and i'm just going to sail in because we've when we've got wind we
9:23
sail should be all good and we'll drop the sails once we get into the lagoon it'll be nice and calm
9:34
beautiful just dropped the head sail it's cruising along with the mainsail now a few
9:40
fishermen over there there must be people around over here in the lagoon there's a few fishermen
9:45
so yeah we're 25 meters of water here so we're just going to skip along the edge of the reef here
9:52
and uh finally find a place with no coral bombies that's sort of under 20 meters and
9:56
we'll just drop there anywhere in here is going to be pretty sheltered it's nearly high tide now
10:01
so everything below high tide is going to be even more calm than this because the
10:04
reef outside is blocking all the waves so yeah it looks pretty optimal have a good rest here
10:43
all right well that's ten
10:59
someone put a dead animal in this thing off very smelly
11:04
it's because we were oh yeah it's pretty stinky three weeks anchored in banda the
11:11
chain came up with a lot of stuff on it and you saw the huddle cleaning that
11:16
a lot of life in the sea and bander i think anyway we've anchored in about 12 13 metres of water here
11:25
we did a little circle in and it's just a gradual sandy slope up to we went into four meters deep
11:32
so it came gradually up from 25 to 4 meters just a gradual slope so pretty perfect spot to anchor
11:40
and now we just let to win push us back on the anchor and dig it in and
11:43
just let out some more chain until i've got about uh 50 meters out should be pretty safe
11:52
so it's 3 30 in the morning and we woke up because it was super windy this night and it started to
12:02
be more and more strong and we started to hear the encore and the chain moving so it's hard to
12:10
see with the rain if we were dragging or not and we are checking and setting the alarm for the
12:17
for the anchor to be sure we are not dragging in the bay
12:21
it's raining super hard the wind has just started calming down now so i'm less worried but
12:28
i turned the engine on put it in gear to take some load off the chain which we sort of heard
12:35
possibly dragging but it might have just been stretching out we're not sure but the difficult
12:39
thing in this situation is to actually know where you are and which way you're pointing
12:44
you might have engine on in gear facing the wrong way you know could be because the gps
12:51
all of the chart plotters don't really show the direction which way you're facing until
12:55
you're moving so if you're staying still it's just a line but it might be the wrong way
13:00
there's no lights around here there's no people so we can't get a bearing on where we are on the
13:05
land so about the only way we can do it is sort of look at the two or three different plotters
13:10
and the depth meter and if we obviously if we're dragging we'd be getting deeper and
13:13
deeper so that stayed the same and uh yeah just crossed my fingers basically we've got the anchor
13:21
alarm on on the plotter set to a quite small range and that's not showing that we're moving
13:28
and now now it's actually started raining harder i think that's the end of the squad
13:32
so the wind will probably die down now so it'll be okay but it's just it's just
13:36
so tricky because you're really blind you just don't know where we are so it's just
13:42
and there's reef all around us front back side every side so that's the tricky thing
13:47
so i think the storm is over the wind is more calm everything is more quiet on board so
13:57
we're gonna go back to bed and hoping that that was the only one of the night
14:47
so after a pretty squally night um yeah the anchor held and everything it wasn't really a problem but
14:54
it was pretty squally and it's a beautiful beautiful location but not really if it's
14:59
weather like this the squirrels can come from any direction and blow you on the beach off the beach
15:04
you can't really go to the beach because it's you know it's just not enjoyable it's raining all the
15:09
time windy so we decided to pull up the anchor and leave to two hours today it was a beautiful
15:15
spot and we did sort of plan to enjoy it here but there's not much point if you you know worried all
15:19
the time and it's just bad weather and raining so decide to use this good wind go to tuala it's 35
15:25
miles so it's not too far should be there in the middle of the afternoon sometime it's 10 o'clock
15:30
now we didn't really leave we didn't really make the decision that early but uh we should be good
15:37
we've got relatively good winds and unless there's really bad currents we should be fine how are you
15:42
feeling about that i'm feeling okay about that i just hope it's gonna not rain too much because
15:48
i don't really like to sail when it's raining the cockpit is a bit too small to not being wet
15:56
it is going to be squally today for sure it's all around squalls so it started off with uh two reefs
16:02
in the main and yeah half the jib out until we we're still in between the channel here still
16:08
coral and stuff around but um yeah just play it by i'll could probably keep both reefs in in the main
16:15
and then just play around with the jib to um keep our speed up we'll try and keep six not average
16:21
to get there a good time pretty much primo sailing right now to be honest we're a couple miles out
16:28
the island's still over there but we we came from around the corner of those little
16:32
little islands you can see marie's on her throne
16:42
took out one reef so we're down to first reef now and got the whole jib out and um yeah i would say
16:50
we've got about i don't know there's the odd wide cap around our wind thing's broken as i've said in
16:55
a few times but there's a few white caps around so i guess we're like 12 knots or something but
16:59
we're doing six eight through the water um oh six eight speed overground there's still
17:08
squalls around over there but no this is about as good as it gets i could pull the full main up when
17:17
we might get to 7-2 or something but um yeah we 10 more knots of breeze will be really flying but
17:23
there's no sea state it's just yeah super relaxing it doesn't even feel like we're going fast
17:28
downwind beautiful we'll get there quite quick at this rate let's see how we go though
17:35
things always change a little update the wind's picked up a little bit
17:39
i don't know now it's probably 15 18 knots maybe but uh they're on a broad reach still got one
17:47
reefing and the full jib out but now instead of sixes we're doing high sevens mid-eights
17:55
just sweetly flown along there's a little bit more waves now but not you know like we're
17:59
going with them really oh they're about yeah 30 degrees across us but it's yeah beautiful
18:06
we're ripping we're halfway already all right we made it here to tual anchored up nicely in
18:15
the harbour it's pretty calm pretty nice hard but look at the sunset sort of 3d it looks crazy babe
18:26
looks pretty rad eh nice end of the day that's probably one of the best downwind
18:30
sails i've ever had with chahelion haven't really sailed downwind a lot with this boat
18:36
um seems like we're mostly sailing upwind that you know sails well upwind or at least like beam reach
18:42
but this was not completely downwind a bit of a
18:46
broad reach but man it was we were flying we were probably averaging seven and a half for
18:51
20 something miles in a row uh got here real fast yeah it was a beautiful day pretty uh pretty epic
18:59
sailing so this is the end of this episode thanks for watching all of you uh hope you enjoy it
19:07
uh the next episode gonna be about a sailing passage again from tual to triton bay
19:14
and um thanks to all of the patreon again that's really awesome that you are supporting what we are
19:22
doing and the work we are putting in all these videos we are super glad of it same for all the
19:28
people who are tipping us sometimes it's really awesome and um yeah see you next week bye bye
