Our time in Indonesia is at an end for now and I'm sailing the boat back to Australia for some much needed TLC. Marie flys back to visit family in France and I set of on the 2700nm journey alone. Its been a while since I sailed Solo but its something I really enjoy so the coming trip is exciting to me. first part of the trip will be Sorong to Tual where I'll clear out of the country.

Right guys welcome to another video. A bit of a noisy one there's a mosque going over there
0:19
I got the engine on here. I'm about to pull up the anchor. J've just dropped Marie off at the airport
0:25
she's flying to Jakarta and amsterd uh to Istanbul and France today and i am sailing to Australia.
0:33
well first i'm sailing to tual where we were a few videos again and then to thursday island and then
0:38
hopefully to cairns in brisbane it's going to be a rush because it's end of the season
0:44
this trade wind's going to start probably sometime and i'm doing it all by myself
0:48
anyway i'm going to pull up the anchor here now and uh get moving
0:52
i'm about two hours behind schedule the tide turned two hours ago i should have gone down
0:55
these channels in the tide but uh i've still got four hours of water moving in my direction so
1:01
i'm going to take it and then maybe we'll anchor up and we'll see anyway let's go
1:09
i got all the dinghy tied down motors on uh outboard's all strapped down
1:13
we've got food we've got water solar panels batteries are full
1:17
everything's good to go i'm in a good mood it's nice weather let's do this
1:35
there's greg and kick over there
1:38
boat called black swan over there greg and kik you've seen before they've been in a couple
1:42
of the videos they're staying around here in raja ampat a bit longer and i'm off on my own
2:00
so
2:29
so
2:36
okay guys we are on the move why would i say we i'm meaning me and shahelion
2:42
my partner in crime we sort of started off this trip this way and now we're going to be
2:47
doing the last big leg it's about uh i think it's around uh 2 600 miles down to brisbane
2:58
and there's only about five to six weeks left before normally trade wind season kicks in and
3:07
it's still cyclone season so yeah i'll definitely be waiting for windows of good weather hopefully
3:14
four or five day windows and then i can just do four or five overnighters like you know
3:19
try and get 700 miles or something in a window and then stop for a few days
3:25
hide somewhere from the wind and then go again when the window presents itself yeah i don't
3:31
know we'll see how we go anyway i'm going to tual first that's about 300 miles 320 miles from here
3:38
and then i'm going to clear out of indonesia there and also wait for the next well first i'm going to
3:43
wait for the weather window there and then clear out and then go to thursday island which is about
3:47
another 700 miles after that but we'll take it step by step i've got about a month backlog of
3:53
other videos from raja ampat that you're watching in the meantime and by the time you watch this
3:58
i'll probably hopefully be in thursday island already and that's where i'll be uploading them
4:02
all right i'm underway i'm getting out of the harbour here now as you can see all the panisis
4:08
and liverboard dive boats you're behind me and now i'm going into this big group of channels
4:14
down through here it's about 30 miles of just mangrove islands and channels and uh yeah getting
4:20
the current down here but i've been sitting in sarong harbour for i think three or four days now
4:26
and my speed wheel a crab or some muscles must have grown in there it's not turning i'll show you
4:35
it's not vital but it's good to know when you've got current how much current you've got
4:39
based you know you can compare it to your gps speed over ground and then okay well
4:43
what's the difference well that must be the current oh wow ah look at this
4:55
uh marie's gone and left me a bunch of little notes around the boat
4:59
what a sweetie eh ah i feel sorry for you guys i feel sorry for myself that i'm gonna be alone now
5:07
but i feel sorry for you guys i think most of you enjoy watching her and listening to her beautiful
5:11
accent more than my ugly old mug but you have to put up with me she might make the odd cameo she
5:17
might send me some little clips from france and eating cheese and uh you know skiing and enjoying
5:23
the cold war maybe even a hot shower who knows but uh yeah you'll have to put up with me for the next
5:28
couple of months she should be back in about june maybe she'll fly to australia and then
5:33
we're going to sail the east coast hopefully of australia because she's never been australian i
5:38
have i'm going to show her a bit of that and then hopefully by the end of the year be planning to go
5:44
to new zealand that's the plan we'll see how we go long steps before then anyway i'm going to go and
5:49
well i'm going to go and put this somewhere nice and then i'm going to go and uh
5:52
pull the through hull out it's always a bit of scary moment and fix the speed wheel
6:03
all right so here it is obviously when i
6:06
pull that speed wheel out potentially a lot of water comes in but it has a little flap actually
6:10
that flaps up and stops i would say 80 percent of the water and then i've got this just a blank
6:16
that i work in there quickly and then that you know then we're watertight again and then i've
6:19
got all the time in the world to clean the actual wheel that's always a bit like nerve-racking oh
6:23
get it and get it in but anyway we'll give it a crack you guys can watch how i do it
6:42
come on
6:54
okay all right so it's probably half a liter water came in but i'll just um
6:59
you know sponge that out into a pot and then i'll clean the wheel and we'll do
7:03
the process in reverse now go and check upstairs and our boats around quickly
7:17
it's a chummy boat uh what is it a squid nighttime squid boat i might wait till we just passed that
7:22
before i uh yeah i'll probably wait till i pass that before i go down and fix the speed wheel
7:29
safety first guys i can be a bit blase about safety you guys probably see that
7:34
every now and again i have told myself i'm going to wear a harness
7:38
uh on this trip well mostly for sure at night anyway and uh yeah i'll try them mostly i'm pretty
7:46
bad with that i have good balance and i feel safe and i know when it's bad weather and when there's
7:51
weird waves i do wear it but i you know you guys are constantly telling you gotta wear your harness
7:57
yeah it's a pain in the butt though
8:05
these things run a generator at night and just you know
8:13
yeah these things run generators at night and they've just got big lights all around them
8:19
and just blast light into the water and then they drop nets down and pull up
8:24
i think squid and shrimp and whatever else maybe prawns i don't even know how it all
8:28
works but yeah they just sit out here anchored and uh just sleep all day and work all night
8:34
okay we've got some free space in front of us i'm gonna go and finish this wheel
8:44
there's the culprit
8:48
there's the culprit there's a slug or something sort of yeah there's some
8:50
weird growth in there i'll give that a bit of a clean and she'll be all good
9:04
all right
9:13
so
9:29
so
9:44
beautiful spin's pretty frilly now sometimes when it gets a bit clogged i'll leave it in a glass of
9:49
vinegar for 10-12 hours or overnight and that cleans it right up
10:22
all right i'll go make sure that's working before i clean up
10:29
yeah look at that
10:36
beautiful job done
11:56
beautiful evening here been basically motor sailing down these whole channels there's no
12:01
wind in here it's land all around as you can see it's a lot of palm trees and stuff around
12:05
beautiful evening though and i've uh the tide's against me now so i'm only doing four knots but
12:10
i'm just pushing on for a couple more miles to get to an anchorage and then i'll stay there the
12:14
night and then catch the tide out in the morning and uh yeah i'll be out in the ocean i think it's
12:19
uh 280 miles from there and uh yeah should be fun i'm looking forward to getting out there and
12:26
just getting in the ocean again doing a bit of a passage it'll be yeah 48 hours hopefully
12:32
if i can catch some wind there's not going to be much wind at all this is a real bad period
12:36
but i just gonna get to two idols so that i can have a jumping off point for the longer passages
12:41
and um you know like then if i see a window i can just clear out and go whereas if i'm waiting
12:47
up here in sarong i've got to go all the way to two i'll clear out and then anyway you understand
12:52
so yeah pretty um pretty boring day but it's the first day alone
12:57
for a year now first day solo sailing for quite a while as well
13:01
um yeah just trying to keep myself busy you know cleaning parts of the boat and i was
13:06
moving stuff around inside and putting away the laundry that i got when i left sarong and just
13:11
trying to keep myself busy i'm not thinking too much and uh marie got safety to jakarta so she's
13:16
all good she's been busy she'll be in a couple of hours boarding her flight to back to europe
13:45
right guys good morning i'm just motoring out of the channel right now you can see behind me
13:51
here just got to go out this gap and then hook a left and then it's 280 miles down to two out
13:57
if you look back to our last 10 videos i'm sort of retracing those steps but not stopping anywhere so
14:02
we go down sort of well 40 miles past missoula but then kaimana triton bay and then yeah down to tua
14:13
but yeah as i said i won't be stopping anywhere along the way stance last night was back in that
14:17
bay and i had internet there and checked the windy this morning yeah not looking really promising uh
14:25
no wind today probably i mean yeah the weather reports here can be wrong i'm hoping they're
14:30
wrong but basically no wind today and then tomorrow a little bit of wind it's saying
14:36
six to eight knots and 10 to 15 knot uh gusts so that's and a bit a bit in front a bit beside a bit
14:47
behind a bit the other side a bit all around the place so basically when it's like that
14:52
variable it just the weather report doesn't know so but what you can gain from that is
14:57
it won't be good wind it'll just be whatever comes along so i'll just have to be a bit aware
15:02
have my sails up there'll probably be squalls uh i might welcome them even just to get some wind
15:10
some of you might say well why are you going and in an answer to that the five days after these two
15:19
are just even worse and looking forward i'm against the clock here
15:27
um the every every week i'm late it means down the east coast of australia
15:35
there's more chance i'm going to be battling headwinds and down there it's tradewinds and
15:39
like you know not nice to be sailing into around here it's calm water it's all enclosed sort of
15:47
if i have to be mowing i'd rather be motoring here than in australia
15:52
uh yeah not that i like to do that but it is the way it is and either i go now or i wait a
15:59
whole nother season which means not going down to brisbane until november december
16:04
which is a long time so i'm trying to make it but if i get to two island islanders just know where
16:08
the window's on the foreseeable future it could be that i reassess and decide to go to darwin instead
16:14
we will see there's no problem the good thing is i'm in a boat it's my home it's relatively
16:19
seaworthy cosmetically it's pretty ugly but um and i can go anywhere i just got out of the channel
16:26
and a bit of wind has picked up would you look at that so i've got the mindset up already i'm
16:32
about to pull out the gym and we'll see how we go it's only about 10 knots but it's uh sort of
16:40
it's about it's at about 40 degrees so that's sort of good i might be able to
16:43
make some use of it anyway let's pull out the headset see how we go
16:55
so
17:08
so
17:27
do
17:36
so
17:53
yes and off we go we're hard on the wind actually 30 degrees but we uh what are we doing
18:04
and we're in six knots a little bit of current here because we're just
18:07
exiting the mouth to the river oh i did not expect this
18:12
if we get every hour i get of this wind i am very happy it's just one hour less motoring
18:20
we wouldn't need to be this hard on the wind but still it's better than motoring
18:36
so
18:47
so
18:56
all right well boat's settled down yeah we're on six nights just beautiful who would have thought
19:02
eh after moaning about motoring for the next 24 hours or 48 hours but anyway knowing it's
19:10
indonesia and probably in 20 minutes it'll just die out completely but let's uh let's be positive
19:16
and hope that it stays like this all right well i'm going to uh settle in and read my book
19:51
it's making a quick coffee and i found note number two
19:58
she's so sweet i feel bad because i didn't do anything like that yeah i'm a terrible
20:06
terrible lover she's amazing i don't deserve it
20:12
ah another one she made me a loaf of bread before she left wow look at a beautiful one too
20:21
keeping me happy and i put some peanut butter oh look at this
20:32
is this the best girlfriend ever i was feeling pretty lonely before and seeing these little
20:39
notes makes me feel more lonely but also makes me feel warm inside she's so good
21:08
what a wonderful life how amazing is this
21:22
you
