Making a new panel for my port side! It's a very slow process so I'll share this over a few videos.

the downside is not increment planned
with all this is to join these two
together because right now I need 77
inches of a single strip of wood this is
just birch by bridge because it's easy
color is to get the right color on it it
has a nice grain pattern as well so I'll
be joining these together with a dremel
routing out about half of it
okay gluing them together to make one
word one long piece of wood yeah so this
is definitely not the cleanest most
efficient you know best way to do it but
this is how I know how to do it that's
all I can really say about that all
right I've got that section cleared out
I'm going to go on to the next one they
don't have to be perfect because I'm
gonna actually fill it with plaster wood
and wood glue to make sure that they're
flush and not porous doc covered a
little bit of wax paper and help prevent
me from making a mess each other I'm
gonna hit them up with a bunch of this
wood glue come back and seal up anything
left with the wood filler we've got a
spare tire there laying it all down keep
it together
I'll check back on hours or so okay so
this joint I made it kind of sucks so
what I'm gonna do is I'm actually gonna
flip it over and redo it with the dowel
here and hopefully that'll get a nice
clean
[Music]
alright so the dowel is basically the
same width as the plywood so what I'm
doing is I'm kind of coming out the back
side the bad wood side that way I can
just file that flat and it'll be hidden
behind I'm gonna do that for each of
these pilot holes that I've drilled yeah
we'll go from there
alright so what I'm doing is I'm filing
down little bits of the dowel and
shoving it in the hole there we've also
got some wax paper on the docks I didn't
pull the Harbormaster as I do this I'm
gonna test fit all these before I glue
anything as the last thing you want to
do is start quilling before you're
actually ready that's why it looks like
kind of joined together so these are
sticking out a little bit caddy go up
this one will file them down after I
glue it in let it dry
so I've got the piece of wood flipped
over here on the backside here a little
bit longer or make sure it doesn't warp
there's another reason to put it I'm
actually gonna go ahead and fill in that
gap with some wood filler help getting
some strength dry
check on it again later this joint is
holding up a lot better than the lap
joint I had before looks pretty good
I'm happy with it I'm gonna let it dry
for a few days be given every chance it
has curing and then I'll come back at it
with a sandpaper and some other
aggressive shaping tools now I'm going
to transfer the template that I made on
CB wood temple it's kind of rough but I
got an idea of the shape I need now so
should be pretty easy to trace out that
shape onto the wood and
go from there I'm putting tape down with
some painters tape now to make it now go
away and into the water like everything
else in this damn marina
neither you might be noticing that I'm
not using a cell phone I can now
actually ditch this old thing I talked
to you with a real camera so I'm pretty
excited about that and I hope you are
too
I messed up on the gap here it was way
too far forward which would have put the
gap right in the middle of the window so
I need to shift everything on the new
wood so that the gap is actually down
here that way I don't have a gap in my
window because that is where the water
comes in so I'm going to trace it onto
the fresh wood here and I won't join the
wood until after I've cut it
[Music]

[Music]
okay so sort of joining it with Dell
going to loan this time then taking
these trips now set them on the edges
hopefully this give it a nice rigid
joint because the stuff is very very
tough
[Music]
don't let that dry
the other side
then we'll go ahead and stain okay I've
got it
basically coated and crap-ton glue don't
let it dry for a bit and bought a planer
so I'm gonna have to clean these a flat
that way they're flush and we'll check
on it when I get back which is joint
there to reinforce it because right now
it's a very strong in this direction but
not so much to the other direction so I
wanna try to get as much reinforcement
as I can
[Music]
right now looks like okay I've let this
dry overnight it is not as flimsy as the
last attempt at that which is good so
today when it dries up a bit I will
stand all these off and grind it down
make it look nice and flush then on the
side we'll have to grind that off and
I'll use my planer to play in these flat
we will get to staining all right this
part I don't recommend doing indoors
like I'm about to do but to do it for me
should basically be covering it now a
preface pre-stain conditioner however I
noticed that doesn't actually do
anything so I'm just gonna move that out
of the way
[Music]
out of the way over there
to get the correct color this dark
reddish brown that is you see yeah all
over my coat I actually need to wear two
of them I'm gonna use this oil walnut as
kind of a base layer and then on top of
that I'll put the red mahogany and I
noticed when I did the other one in the
back cabin what that does is that gives
the royal walnut gives the grain kind of
a darkish darkish grain and they don't
actually leave that on for very long I
do a kind of a quick layer on it and
then I'll wipe it off and let it set for
a while and then when I come back with
the right mahogany that gives it the
nice brown color so those two are gonna
go on the front I've got this
waterproofing sealer that'll go on the
back I don't kind of protect the wood
from potential leakage and stop it from
doing that in the long term
so after after I've got the wood colored
and treated I will make a cut right here
to separate that panel out and I'll have
to knock out this window and I'm going
to wait for a day where I have good
weather all day because right now if I
were to do it now I'd get all my stuff
wet and that is not good so that is the
dark walnut the first half
we're going to save the second half for
later but yeah I've already wiped it off
wiped off all the excess stain and we're
gonna let that cure for a few hours and
set in before we come back with the
royal ball or with the right mahogany
sorry
[Music]
[Music]
okay
it's not a perfect match but it is
pretty darn close I think we're gonna be
able to live with that you can see here
the this is the original air versus the
layer with the red mahogany on it versus
unstained completely so next step is to
do this half and make sure that looks
good and then once that's done we'll get
it put up there but you can kind of see
a comparison here of the two colors got
the original up top and this is the new
on the bottom here pretty happy with how
that turned out
I'm gonna let it dry probably overnight
before I touch it again and that's all
I'm gonna report
