🏆 Team Racing & Championship Highlights
The episode dove into the world of team racing and recent US Sailing events:
The Hinman Trophy: The discussion centered on the recent US Team Racing Championship at Larchmont Yacht Club. L\O\S (Larchmont, Oyster Bay, Seawanhaka) won, continuing their dominant streak which also includes the College Nationals and the UK's Wilson Trophy. Amanda Callahan is a fourtime Hinman winner. The 2024 Hinman will be at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.
Team Racing Formats: Amanda discussed the global spread and future of team racing. She explained the difference between the "purest" form of 3v3 and the more spectatorfriendly 2v2. The World Sailing Team Racing World Championship will be held 2v2 in J80s in Sweden in 2026.
Annapolis 321: This unique regatta tests teams by rotating them through Match Racing in J/105s, 3v3, and 2v2 in the same round robin.
US Sailing Triple Header:
US Adult Championship: Held at the highest altitude ever for the event—Park City Sailing Association, Utah—and won by the Twin City Sailing Association group.
US Para Sailing Championship: Julie Smith (Hansa 303) and Michael Lung & Scott Cobb (Martin 16) were crowned champions in extremely tight racing in California.
SailGP: The German team won their first event, and the US team posted a solid performance but remains in negative points for the season.
⚖️ Weight & Watchability
Heavy Lifting: A pop quiz revealed that 326 pounds of trophies and cases were shipped to the US Youth Championship.
The Olympic Question: The hosts argued that team racing or match racing should be utilized in the Olympics. Their short, easily understood win/loss results would make sailing far more exciting and watchable for a TV audience.
