hi folks this week's video is about how
0:09
we look after our take on imperatus and
0:12
how I made an Almighty great balls up
0:14
I'll see you at the end of the video
0:18
I may have made a faux path
0:22
or in technical terms a balls up Bob's
0:27
your uncle fan is your Aunt as they say
0:29
Let's uh
0:31
get tidied up
0:33
it's still a good six millimeters it's
0:37
maybe seven millimeters over a quarter
0:39
of an inch thick
0:40
[Music]
0:53
[Music]
0:58
I may have made a faux pas
1:01
a couple of weeks ago I put the extra
1:05
victron charger in there
1:07
um we know we know they get hot so I
1:10
fitted computer fans to them and the
1:13
idea was
1:14
the air gets drawn down through here so
1:17
it gets blown up through here there's a
1:20
lid on here and then there's a hole down
1:23
the back here you can see and get my
1:25
hand right down there and the air comes
1:28
up
1:29
and then there's slots in there
1:33
which is behind where our TV normally
1:36
goes mounted on this bracket
1:39
and I assumed right or wrongly that
1:43
there would be enough airflow
1:45
to uh
1:47
to keep this area cool
1:51
hindsight is a great thing
1:54
there isn't
1:55
and the problem is that there's nowhere
1:57
for the air to come in or out now
2:00
what what I wanted to do is to put an
2:03
air vent in here but as I explained to
2:05
you this is a this is watertight these
2:08
compartments
2:10
so I'm going to have to have a
2:13
compromise
2:14
and I think that compromise is going to
2:16
be
2:19
yeah I'm not using all four of those
2:21
fans that's
2:23
another project but I bought this
2:26
Grill and I think what we're gonna have
2:28
to do is fit this Grille in here which
2:30
will make that look really nice and
2:34
spiffy as mad as would say and the idea
2:38
then is to fit two of these fans behind
2:41
that switched in the same way to get the
2:44
air to circulate around inside there
2:47
that's the idea
2:49
[Music]
3:17
[Music]
3:24
foreign
3:31
that's
3:33
going in there
3:35
two hours later six mil quarter of an
3:39
inch that way
3:41
and now okay right
3:44
six and a half hours later
4:00
so what I did was I marked out the slot
4:03
that I needed to cut out and then marked
4:05
out four holes one in each corner now
4:08
I've been using these they're cone
4:11
Cutters they've been quite useful on the
4:14
boat recently
4:15
um I used the smallest one I'm putting
4:18
12 millimeter hole in the corner and
4:20
this allowed me to put a jigsaw blade
4:22
through the hole and cut the slot
4:26
it's good
4:29
[Applause]
4:39
[Music]
4:52
[Music]
5:01
foreign
5:08
[Applause]
5:20
jigsaw
5:31
[Music]
5:43
okay one in metal switch but
5:52
the moment of truth
5:57
all right
6:04
foreign
6:11
once those Corners just surrounding out
6:14
a little bit more I'll do that with the
6:16
um
6:19
the sound of people yeah
6:22
so it's supposed to Spring in
6:26
those those bits are supposed to Spring
6:28
in so it's got to be tight and it fits
6:31
that huh
6:33
so but it's just the corners I'm getting
6:35
a little um detail sandal
6:39
okay so now all we have to do is connect
6:42
up a couple of fans
6:45
you'll remember in that cooling video we
6:47
showed you the circuit diagram and how
6:49
to connect up those fans with the two
6:51
thermostatic switches in parallel that
6:54
turned out to be a good idea as B2B
6:57
charger number one appears to be working
6:59
quite a bit harder than B2B charger
7:01
number two anyway this is how we
7:04
connected up the two additional fans
7:06
again everything is in parallel and
7:09
therefore if one gets hotter than the
7:11
other and all the fans will be switched
7:13
on so if one charger is working harder
7:16
than the other one of the thermostatic
7:18
switches fails or indeed one of the fans
7:21
fail the built-in redundancy of running
7:23
everything in parallel means that it
7:25
will still get cooling from the other
7:28
fans they'll still come on
7:38
well there we go that's in
7:42
fans are in at the back two of them
7:44
they're wired up
7:46
to the other two in pair the heat
7:49
sensitive switches there's the
7:51
thermostatic switches will come on when
7:54
we charge up
7:55
turn those two fans on I've just checked
7:58
that they're okay I may put a little
8:00
screw in here look just to push that
8:03
back and it's very tight
8:07
and then I've ordered another
8:09
one to go in there the air is going to
8:12
be pushed up through here now
8:15
up the back past the other charger which
8:18
is out of use
8:20
and out of there and then hopefully I
8:22
can move the TV to there
8:25
Bob's your uncle fannies your aunt as
8:27
they say
8:31
hey well just got back from the um
8:35
back from the marina office
8:38
and got our delivery
8:41
from trendio which is the
8:44
Turkish equivalent of eBay uh it's not
8:47
brilliant but it seems to work
8:50
um we've ordered it
8:51
one of these another one of these
8:54
um
8:55
we've had the uh engine on and the
8:57
battery charging up Etc battery is
8:59
charging up
9:01
um
9:03
it works but it's just not quite enough
9:06
airflow
9:07
um I'm hoping that this will make a
9:08
difference that's uh
9:11
give it a Polish and that'll slot in
9:16
pretty nicely I think what we'll do is
9:18
we won't screw this one in we'll cut
9:20
that
9:22
so that it spring fits in so that I can
9:25
take it out if I need to clean it or I
9:29
may put some
9:31
may put some fly screen on there
9:33
the trouble is that fly screen does
9:36
reduce the
9:38
free flow area
9:41
hey ho right let's get on with that
9:45
so having marked out the hole I then use
9:48
the oscillating multi-tool from Bosch to
9:52
cut out the hole exactly to size and it
9:54
went well
9:56
oh that's in
9:59
and if you can hear the fans are running
10:02
and there's quite a bit of air coming
10:04
out of there
10:06
we've moved to TV
10:09
and there's a bit of cabling to do for
10:12
the TV the aerial
10:15
Etc has got a Blu-ray player in the
10:17
corner there as well
10:19
we've got to tidy up those
10:21
but yeah that is done a bit polish on
10:26
here just gotta get rid of some of these
10:28
pencil marks and that we didn't realize
10:29
were behind the Telly but yeah that's it
10:31
done
10:33
jobs are good
10:38
perfect
10:40
so just before we show you how we deal
10:42
with our teeth and keep it looking so
10:44
good I thought I'd explain a little bit
10:46
about teak and why we do what we do
10:50
the teak on our cockpit is quarter sawn
10:54
it's not plain sawn or Rifts on this
10:57
makes the timber quite hard wearing but
10:59
it does open up the pores
11:01
this is plain sawn Oak and this is Rifts
11:06
on mahogany
11:07
and this is cortisone take and you can
11:10
see that the veins run across the wood
11:12
you quite often see that as the teak
11:15
catches the sunlight
11:16
anyway
11:18
our cheek is what they call blonde take
11:21
here in the UK it looks a little bit
11:24
like a Rocco which is what's called
11:26
African teak around the rest of the
11:28
world in different parts of the world
11:30
and indeed in different parts of the
11:32
country these different Woods are all
11:34
assumed to be teak although they are
11:37
from the teak family traditional Burmese
11:40
tea girl Brazilian teak from large
11:43
mature trees is virtually non-existent
11:46
these days due to unsustainable logging
11:49
in the countries in which it was
11:50
produced
11:52
foreign
11:54
Timber has a good strong solid surface
11:57
however cortisone Timber does have voids
12:02
or pores exposed in the surface and this
12:06
can lead to dirt and dust and mud being
12:10
ingrained and you can't fill these with
12:12
the sanding sealer like you would on a
12:15
piece of furniture as the wood needs to
12:17
breathe when it's outside as the timber
12:20
expands and contracts it naturally tries
12:23
to breathe and if you seal the surface
12:26
it will start to form cracks that's why
12:29
we oil our take and not seal it up with
12:32
varnish or some kind of epoxy sealer
12:37
you might think that teak is quite a
12:40
dense hardwood well actually it's not
12:43
that dense it's down there with cherry
12:46
and pine it's not particularly hard or
12:49
dense at all and that's because of these
12:53
voids or vessels or pores within the
12:56
wood the marine environment isn't
12:58
particularly kind to Teak and yes salt
13:02
water will help to clean it but those of
13:04
you who have teak decks in the northern
13:07
hemisphere will know they quite often go
13:09
green and it's this that destroys them
13:13
we would suggest that take needs to be
13:15
cared for with natural products and not
13:18
chemicals and don't be afraid to give it
13:22
a little sanding now and then
13:25
after all it's expensive stuff take
13:28
doesn't just grow on trees you know
13:32
as we mentioned in the last video we're
13:35
starting to do some boat maintenance
13:36
work now
13:38
and it's been about three years since we
13:40
did our last lot which was back in data
13:44
in Italy
13:46
so we clean the teak just gently very
13:51
gently with a mild soap and a scrubbing
13:54
brush and leave it to dry for a couple
13:56
of days and then very gently sand it now
14:00
we're using 120 grit on my Makita
14:06
that's got an adjustable speed on it so
14:09
you can make it very very light you can
14:11
see I've just taken the surface off and
14:16
that allows the oil to penetrate
14:19
this piece here hasn't been done yet
14:23
you can see
14:25
I'll show you that in a minute
14:27
and that one there has had its first
14:30
coat
14:31
uh down a half ago
14:34
so I've got two coats all the way around
14:36
including the cockpit table which is
14:39
workbench at the moment and the
14:41
companion way and the doors now they fed
14:43
pretty well and that's mainly because
14:46
we've had the canopy and the Bimini up
14:48
so the oil
14:50
um
14:51
although we had two coats on there it
14:54
hasn't it hasn't faded and gone white
14:56
there's nothing wrong with white teak I
14:58
quite like it on the floor it's it's
15:00
okay but it um the teeth gets dry and
15:05
when water sits on it it it soaks in and
15:08
the oil helps to make that bead and
15:11
disappear so I'm going to finish off
15:14
this little bit here and I'll show you
15:15
what it's like when I've done
15:18
and I'm just
15:19
finishing off
15:23
these edges
15:25
by hand
15:29
just
15:31
rather than hit them with
15:36
the sander
15:38
some bits
15:39
there
15:41
which are pretty difficult to get at but
15:43
you can get right in the corners by
15:46
folding the sandpaper over
15:48
now
15:51
anticipate in comments
15:54
there is somehow
15:58
chap somewhere who was a midshipman when
16:02
Nelson was a cabin boy
16:04
who's going to tell you oh you should
16:07
never ever sand take
16:10
blah blah blah blah well to him I just
16:14
say one word well two words
16:17
holy Stone they've been rubbing down
16:19
teak decks and treating them accordingly
16:22
with holy stones and sand for about 600
16:25
years so um
16:28
there is there is uh plastic underneath
16:31
them when they go through you replace
16:33
them that's how it works
16:36
um but you'll get 15 20 years out of
16:40
a decent take deck as long as it's not
16:42
got screws in it
16:43
if it's got screws holding the teak down
16:46
then that's another issue
16:49
um
16:50
that's an issue you don't get with
16:51
modern boats but you do get with some of
16:53
the older ones
16:56
um and if you don't think screws through
16:58
the deck is that bad and watch meds on
17:02
the sale life and see what happened to
17:04
his decks mainly because water got into
17:07
the decks through the screw holes and um
17:09
some of the cleats and fittings in that
17:12
oh yeah she's gonna have a deck
17:16
um
17:17
make sure the cheek is bonded or don't
17:19
have take that's the other thing because
17:21
it's a pain in the backside you have to
17:23
clean it you have to oil it it holds the
17:25
heat during the day and then at night
17:27
when you really want to be nice and cool
17:29
it gives up all its heat back into your
17:31
boat so have it on the floor in the
17:34
cockpit
17:35
but don't have it on the decks
17:38
ain't that right misses
17:42
nearly done
17:47
got all the floor to do got loads to do
17:50
the table to do
17:52
it won't take longer
17:54
oh it's nearly beer o'clock and
17:56
therefore I have to stop work
17:59
and my able assistant then has to do the
18:02
teak oiling you hate painting you hate
18:04
oiling I I'm hanging wallpaper whoever
18:08
invented wallpaper should be hung like
18:10
wallpaper
18:12
now I do hate painting but it's quite
18:15
satisfying doing t-coiling because you
18:18
know you see the the finished job and
18:21
that is
18:24
looking really good you missed a bit
18:25
over there darling
18:30
that's it you got it now yeah absolutely
18:31
no that's bad sand in that bit is it
18:35
I'll set the sanding blight
18:40
so you can see the difference there now
18:42
that that's
18:43
just sanded that's unsanded
18:48
that's the wife
18:52
and the trick is to get that as even as
18:54
you possibly can
18:56
not that I'm telling you how to do it
18:57
darling but you know
19:00
so even coats and when you're doing your
19:02
sanding
19:04
again don't go mad just nice and gently
19:07
even coats don't worry about going over
19:10
the
19:12
secret Flex well these aren't actually
19:13
Seeker flex but don't worry about going
19:16
over the black you don't want to Hollow
19:18
out the teak you want to keep it nice
19:20
and even now as you know we've done
19:23
these this is
19:25
year eight for this boat and they've
19:28
been done once at gator
19:31
we sanded them I think
19:34
last year no
19:36
no yeah
19:39
um
19:40
and I think we've oiled them once
19:42
without sanding them in Port Solon yeah
19:45
yeah just to protect them
19:49
so there you go
19:50
we haven't worn through the teak you can
19:52
see I'll show you there look
19:56
it's still a good six millimeters it's
19:59
maybe seven millimeters over a quarter
20:01
of an inch thick
20:04
I haven't worn it out
20:07
and it still looks the max nuts
20:14
there we go right I better go and open
20:16
the beer or I'll be in trouble don't
20:19
worry if your teak appears to come up a
20:22
little blotchy at first
20:24
that's uh Not Unusual some bits of teeth
20:26
dry out quicker than others or soak the
20:28
oil in quicker it'll come out right in
20:30
the end
20:33
there we are just been to look at a
20:36
problem on another boat for someone
20:44
tick looks okay let's just have one coat
20:50
you can see the difference there between
20:52
the floor
20:54
yeah and I know it's got a green LED
20:56
lights on
20:59
and the teak
21:01
and this side
21:08
when I get to the end I'm gonna get wet
21:10
you're going to fall in I'll fall in
21:14
um
21:15
this bit is quite warm but I guess
21:18
that's because we use it for
21:20
swimming and diving in that
21:22
but it's still
21:24
five mil thick
21:26
that bit in there
21:29
the bottom of that step is like eight
21:31
mil thick but it doesn't ever get used
21:34
does it no and that's come up really
21:36
nice as well
21:38
so still first coat just really light
21:44
and it's coming up gorgeous
21:49
and it will protect it from the
21:53
next Summers
21:57
sunshine and
22:00
whatever
22:05
and you remember
22:08
there's four sections of teak there and
22:12
four under my butt
22:15
that we took right out and we cut the
22:18
holes for the
22:20
for the um David Savage
22:24
I'll put a link in the description to
22:26
that video I think there's two
22:28
when we fit the davits and um
22:31
I cut all the teak out four bands of it
22:35
cut a big hole in there but big piece of
22:38
pry up inside fiberglass that in drilled
22:40
the holes
22:43
seems like ages ago now where was this
22:46
nearly five years ago
22:48
nearly six dollars no five years is it
22:50
yeah
22:52
hey hug
22:54
yeah I mean you
22:57
've got the um the rebuilds come up
22:59
lovely and it's lasted and you can't see
23:01
the join
23:03
just like me can't see the join now
23:06
I know I haven't been sitting around
23:08
watching I'm cleaning downstairs and all
23:12
the bilges get all the dust out and the
23:15
dog cares yes I'm still finding them
23:17
yeah Oscar's gone but he's still here
23:22
oh there we go it's all finished
23:25
may give it another coat later in the
23:27
year but for now that's it job's done
23:30
it's a good in fact Madame likes it so
23:33
much she's been out here reading her
23:34
book
23:35
hi guys hope you enjoyed the video we're
23:37
now in our winter Mooring we'll be going
23:40
out every now and then and doing a bit
23:41
of siling but for now
23:44
um we're going to be doing lots of
23:45
Maintenance and I've got a couple of
23:47
boats to look after uh this winter so
23:50
we'll be doing the maintenance on them
